- NC Has done what a lot of schools have done to get good- or apparently good and what we should probably do as well: they filled their early schedule with cotton candy. While we opened with Colgate, we then dived into the deep end of the pool with Louisville, South Florida, a road game at Connecticut and then Notre Dame two weeks later, the Pack feasted on Williams and Mary, East Carolina, (who beat them) and Old Dominion. They also played Wake Forest on a dry field and Notre Dame in that hurricane. A lot of their statistical dominance comes from that early schedule.

- And now they’ve lost 4 in a row. They are also 0-3 in road games. Shouldn’t a home game against a team with four straight losses and can’t win on the road be exactly what the doctor ordered for Syracuse right now?

- It’s a battle of two 4-5 teams trying to save their bowl hopes after being up and down all year. We could be the ‘up’ team this week.

- All of Ryan Finley’s seven interceptions have come during the four game losing streak.

- While our defense started out the year poorly and our offense was productive, it’s the defense that has improved while the offense has stagnated. Yes, we gave up 54 points last week but three turnovers, a short punt and a failed on-sides kick had a lot to do with that. We had 6 tackles for a loss in that game, one less than Clemson who has led the nation in that category four years in a row. Finlay is a stationary quarterback our guys can draw a bead on.

- Matt Dayes is a fine running back but he’s carried the ball 167 times. Samuels and Gallaspy have carried the ball 43 times between them. We can draw a bead on Dayes, too. He’s really the whole show for their running attack.

- Another excerpt from my preview: “An opposing coach told ESPN: “If you’re really good up front, you go nose to nose with them and you go right at them. If you don’t feel you can handle that, then what kind of perimeter game do you have and can you fatigue those guys?” We ought to be able to fatigue Bradley Chubb, at least. (Just kidding, Bradley, if you’re reading this.)” We don’t run wide but we pass wide – a lot. We saw what this offense did to a Virginia Tech team that looks a lot better than NC State. The whole issue is to keep moving the chains. If we do that, we can wear anyone down.

- Their defensive weakness is their secondary and Syracuse is the perfect team to exploit that. Again, from Nunes: “NC State’s defense has not really managed to challenge opponents that chose to throw the ball. Through nine games, they’re allowing over 250 passing yards per game (92nd in the country), 61 percent completions and 18 touchdowns. Given the array of receivers Syracuse has at its disposal, any quarterback we have back there should be able to exploit this weakness for State.”

- In Scott Shafer’s first year, we lost a 0-56 game to Georgia Tech and came back to win the next two. Then we lost a 3-59 game to Florida State. The next week we lost a one pointer to Pitt and the kicked that field against BC to send us to the bowl game, which we won. It can happen again.

4-5 with 3+ to go!

LET’S GO ORANGE!!!!
