- Stats where Syracuse is better than Notre Dame: Rushing yardage: #27 (216 yards per game) vs. 42nd (199). Passing yardage: #36 (266) vs. 41st (254). Yards per completion: 60th (12.43) vs. 63rd (12.34). Total yardage: #14 (482) vs. 27th (427). Scoring: #7 (44.4) vs. 29th (34.5). Red Zone offense: 26th (37TDs, 19FG in 63 trips = 88.9% scoring percentage. 279 points in 63 trips = 4.43) vs. 28th (29TDs 9FG in 43 trips = 88.4% 201/43 = 4.67). Time of possession: 66th (30:03) vs. 82nd (29:16). Those are not unimportant things but the margins are not exactly “knuckles on the table”. Here are some more impressive stats: Takeaway Margin: 4th (25-12 = +13) vs. #49 (15-13 = +2); third down defense: 5th (26.2%) vs. 52nd (37.5%); Blocked kicks: 2 by us (28th) and 0 against us (1st) vs. 1 (65th) and 2 (71st) for the Irish. Kickoff Return Defense: 4th (16 of 55 returned for 245 yards = 15.3) vs. 124th (of 129 teams) 23 of 30 for 578 yards = 25.1). Net Punt Yardage: 16th (40.52) vs. 56th (37.95). Punt Returns: 11th (15.50: Sean Riley leads the nation with 17.4) vs. 49th (10.38). Sacks: 10th (33 for 219 yards) vs. 53rd (23/165). Tackles for a loss: 26th (72 for 341 yards) vs. 66th (60 for 268). The formula to win is to get one more turnover, block a kick, return a kickoff and a punt and gain 10+ yards with every exchange of punts. That and get off the field on their third downs.
- Dungey can cut down on the pass rush with the short passing game. With the running backs becoming more productive the run-pass option could be effective. If their line is so good at rushing the passer why are they 53rd in sacks and 66th in tackles for a loss? We need to wait for the proper moment and then throw deep – and stay away from Julian Love. The other guys in their backfield aren’t that good.
- We are 10th in sacks and 26th in TFLs. And Ian Book is fragile. From Nunes’ interview with One Foot Down: “How concerned were you about getting Ian Book back for this one? How does he better set the Irish up to beat Syracuse? Very concerned. We all thought ND could get past Florida State with Brandon Wimbush at QB. FSU, although talented, is a bad, poorly-coached team. Syracuse is a different story. They’ve got a hell of an offense that is going to score some points, so it’s critical that the Irish offense is able to move the ball, have more time of possession, and score on more of their drives. Book enables all of that with his accuracy and consistency. Wimbush has the physical tools, but is so inconsistent on short-to-intermediate throws that it can kill drives (or give the other team points, considering the interceptions he’s prone to tossing).” Book has 15TDs passes and 4 picks. Winbush had 4TD passes and 6 picks. Meet at the quarterback! We'll not only get to Book and Winbush in the game. We'll get them in their nightmares, too.
- There are all kinds of reasons to favor Notre Dame. And I’m sure Dino has made sure his team has heard every one of them. This is our big moment, not theirs. Who’s moment? Our Moment!
8-2 and 2+ to do!
LET’S GO ORANGE!!!
