- When I make out my NCAA bracket each spring one rule of thumb I like to use is that if two opponents play at a different level of completion, an upset is more likely to occur if the teams plays a different style: the favored team will be less prepared for it and less comfortable if the underdog can make the game the type of game they prefer to play. If they play a similar style, the favored team is likely to win because they are used to it and they are playing it with better athletes.
- This will be Tommy DeVito’s real coming out party. He’s prepared all his life for this and he’s going to show everybody what all the fuss was about.
- All those talent receivers Dino’s been recruiting are ready to bust out themselves. We know what we’ve got with Sean Riley and Nykeim Johnson. Taj Harris started to emerge last season. Tris Jackson finally got to play in the bowl game and scored. We still haven’t heard much from Sharod and Kevin Johnson, Cam Jordan, Russell Thompson-Bishop , Cooper Lutz, Anthony Queeley, the injured Ed Hendrix, (who was supposed to be the best of all), and exciting newcomers Courtney Jackson and Kevin Mital. We may get to see a lot of those guys in this game and I’m looking forward to it.
- Moe Neal is going to have a big senior year. Explosive Abdul Adams may be nursing an injury but Jarveon Howard, Markenzy Pierre and Jawhar Jordan all have plenty of talent and I look forward to seeing them, too. I was reading a book about World War II and a German tank operator was asked after the war what he thought of Sherman tanks. He said “We were able to handle the first ten of them we saw but the eleventh one got us. We have a lot of Sherman tanks.
- Aaron Hackett’s Dad assured me that we shouldn’t overlook his son. Tight ends caught three TD passes in the spring game. If the Flames focus on the wide-outs and the running backs, they’ll flame out.
- With all we’ve got on offense, Dino Babers said that our defense was ahead of the offense in camp. He says it’s the best defense we’ve ever had. Liberty has one good pass rusher, Jessie Lemonier, who had 10 sacks and 13.5 TFLs. We’ve got two guys like that: Alton Robinson and Kendall Coleman both had 10 sacks. Robinson had 17TFLs and Coleman had 12. Those guys will be coming toward Calvert from both directions.
- We’ve got a new linebacking crew but the talent level there seems high. Andrew Armstrong, in addition to having a great name for the positon, has played a lot and at all three positions. Lakiem Williams is “a weight room star”. Tyrell Richards “has the frame to play in the ACC…He had 16 tackles, three sacks and a pick last season, and the impressive athlete is anxious for more this season.“ Juan Wallace was one of the top 40 linebackers in his high school class. Kadeem Trotter is a “plus coverage player”. Mikel Jones and Lee Kpogba, (pronounced 'Ko-buh') were both four star recruits and we could see a lot of them this year.
- We’ve got no less than 22 defensive backs. Scoop Bradshaw, Antwan Cordy, Evan Foster and Christopher Fredrick are all hugely experienced seniors. Fredrick may be the conference’s best returning cornerback. Safety Andre Cisco was an all-American as a freshman, leading the nation in interceptions. Ifeatu Melifonwu and Atrillion Williams were big time recruits who played a lot last year and Corneilius Nunn was the gem of this year’s recruiting class. When Buckshot fades back to pass he’ll not only have to keep an eye on both sides of the pocket for Robinson and Coleman but he’ll see his receivers being covered by guys he may be watching play on Sunday someday. We’ll be using the nickel defense, (4-2-5) a lot to take advantage of their skills. It will allow us not only to blanket the passing game but there should be plenty of hats in the picture on a running play. Get here first with the most men!
- It’s tough to pull off a big upset with a bad defense and Liberty was very bad last year: 36.9 points (117th in the country of 130 teams) 484.8 yards (123th) 221.8 rushing (117th) 262.9 passing (113rd) per game. If they are anything like that this year, we’ll blow right through them.
- SB Nation on their kicking game: “The second-worst special teams in the country. DJ Stubbs’ punt returns were solid, but kickers Aaron Peart and Alex Probert had minimal range on either field goals or kickoffs, and punter Aidan Alves averaged 33.9 net yards per kick and ranked 128th in punt efficiency.” Ours was the best, bar none.
- Liberty played two power conference teams last year, losing to Virginia 24-45 and Auburn 0-53. They also lost to 11-2 Army 14-38 and 9-4 North Texas 7-47. Their wins were over 4-8 Old Dominion, 3-9 New Mexico, 10-3 Troy (22-16), 6-5 Idaho State, 3-9 New Mexico State, (whom they played twice and also lost to), and 4-7 Norfolk State. Are you scared of that?
- Maybe it's not the American Revolution. Maybe it's the War of 1812 and we're about to burn the White House.
0-0 and 12+ to go!
