- Because that Duke game was real. This team got tired of losing and decided to listen to the coaches and play the game the way tis supposed to be played. The offensive line changes allowed the offense to become functional, (although the wind held the passing down). The return of Bear Williams strengthened the defensive line and the simpler defensive concepts eliminated much of the confusion we saw against BC. This team has tasted blood and they’ll want more.
- Williams return allowed our excellent defensive ends to make plays and they responded with 2 ½ sacks and 3 1/2 TFLs, the sort of production we’ve waited all season for. Lakeim Williams had 14 tackles and 2 ½ sacks of his own. Wonderful things happen when you have a tackle who can tie up blockers.
- The Card’s left tackle, Mekki Beckton, a 6-7 355 man mountain, missed the alst game with an ankle injury and is ‘questionable’ for tomorrow. I’d actually rather have him in there, trying to keep in front of Robinson or Coleman with that heft and that ankle.
- Our running game is beginning to pound people. We ran the ball for 192 yards and 2 scores against Florida State, 159 and no scores vs. BC, (we had to abandon the run after we fell so far behind) and 286 yards and 4 scores against Duke, who was supposed to have a good rushing defense. We may need it if conditions are bad. But I’d like to see it in conjunction with a full-scale passing game with DeVito, Jackson and, hopefully more of Luke Benson.
- But our biggest weapon is a shoot-out will be Louisville’s defense. Here are some comments from Card Chronicle’s CardinalStrong (on Nunes/Magician): “I think it has actually regressed some, maybe due to wear and tear or maybe some more challenging opponents the last 3-4 weeks….One of the Orange on Saturday is about to look like a Heisman contender… at least for one week….I think the DeVito-Jackson combo freaks me out a little as I think any level of consistency on that side of the ball is a concern against a defense that is reeling a bit.” Louisville is 100th in the country in total defense (432 ypg), 103rd in scoring defense (33ppg). 87th against the run (175ypg), and 108th against the pass (257ypg). We can do business against these guys.
4-6 and 2+ to go!
