- Because in 1915 we had an all-time record vs. then undefeated Colgate was 3-12-2 and whipped them 38-0
- Because in 1919 Pittsburgh had won 34 straight games against college teams and two national championships in that time. Then they came to town and we whupped ‘em 24-3.
- Because in 1923, Wallace Wade took his Alabama team north to play Syracuse and we beat them 23-0. Wade later said that he’d learned more football on that afternoon than on any other day of his life.
- Because in 1938, after going 0-11-2 vs. Colgate since 1925, the orange finally beat their rivals 7-0.
- Because in 1956 we played Maryland, who had been 60-9-2 since 1949 and whipped ‘em in their own place, 26-12.
- Because, in 1959 we played a Texas team beginning a 56-8-2 run in the Cotton Bowl and we beat them 23-14.
- Because in 1967 we traveled out to the west coast to play a UCLA team that had been 24-3-2 under Heisman Trophy winner Gary Beban and were ranked #1 until they lost to USC’s eventual national champions with OJ Simpson, 20-21 the previous week and we dominated them 32-14, ending with the ball in front of their goal line. Rick Cassata, our quarterback, had 266 total yards compare to Beban’s 9 yards.
- Because in 1970 a depleted Syracuse team whipped Penn State, who had a 31 game unbeaten streak going into that season, 24-7 in their own place.
- Because in 1984, we knocked off #1 Nebraska, a 28 point favorite, 17-9 in the Dome.
- Because in 1987, we crushed defending national champion Penn State 48-21, a game we led 41-0 at one point.
- Because in 1991, we beat 5th ranked Florida, who had just demolished Alabama, 35-0, in the only game the Tide lost that year, 38-21. The Gators haven’t played a non-conference game outside their state since.
- Because we opened 1998 losing to that year’s national champion, Tennessee, 33-34 on a controversial call in the Dome and then blew the previous year’s national champion out of their own place, 38-28, a game that was 38-7 going into the fourth quarter.
- Because in 2007, we were 38 point underdogs at Louisville and won, 38-35.
- Because in 2017, we beat #2 Clemson, 27-24 in the Dome.
- Because they think we have no chance to win. We’ve got them right where we want them.
- Meanwhile our kinds have sent the week being told they have no chance. They’ve had that for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
- Besides, we have a quarterback that looks just like theirs.
1-4 and 6(?) to go!
