- Here is an excerpt from my SU Football preview, discussing Florida State:
“It's hard to shake the image that Florida State is a blue-blood because they were so good for so long. But after three losing seasons in a row and reading about their team, they may not be a blue-blood any more. Their defense recorded 9 sacks while their offense suffered 29 sacks. None of their receivers averaged 13.0 yards per catch. They are looking to a Kansas transfer to upgrade their receiving corps and trying to rehabilitate McKenzie Milton, the former Central Florida star who suffered 9 knee surgeries to be their quarterback. This is Florida State?”

- An opposing coach said: “I think you’re seeing a lot of talent leaving for internal reasons. It’s just an inconsistency of culture, going from one polarizing head coach to another and then to another and another. …Right now they’re not recruiting well enough to keep things going without seeing a dip in the next few years.” Reading about them one word comes up over and over again: ‘transfer’. It’s an era of transfers but the word described so many key players for Florida State it created a sense of desperation – a program rebuilding from scratch or desperately having to avoid doing so. The uniforms are the same but the players inside them aren’t.

- Mckenzie Milton has 2 TD passes and 4 interceptions and his net rushing is zero yards. Travis Jordan is completing 50% of his passes and running the ball for 1.3 yards a carry.

- Florida State is giving up 283 yards a game passing. It’s there to be taken, if we can take it. Either Garrett Shrader will prove that he can take advantage of a porous pass defense or Tommy DeVito will. (If not, see “Why Florida State will win”.)

- Dino talked about wanting to improve not only the passing game but also the running game. That’s certainly possible. If Chris Elmore is available as a lead blocker, that could help. The two-man game between Shrader and Tucker has just begun to jell. Dakota Davis is working his way back to normal and should solidify a line that performed well against a standard defense before Liberty decided to pack the box on them. And, of course if can burn them through the air, that will help the running game immensely.

- Not only is Taj Harris back but Damien Alford is looking like a star – if we can just get him the ball. You can’t teach size and speed.

- Our defensive numbers are something we could only dream about before this season started: We are 10th in the country in total defense, (261 yards), 18th in rushing (85), 28th in passing (176) and 28th in scoring (18 points). This defense is going to keep us in game after game and give us a chance to win any of them.

- Then there’s the still ticking time bomb. We’ve had 31 ‘takeovers’ in 2018, 25 in 2019 and 24 in 2020 – and 3 this year through four games. An aggressive defense like ours should force a lot of turnovers. It’s time to go out and get them.

- Since the beginning of the 2018 season we are 19-21. Florida State is 14-24. So who’s afraid of the big bad ‘Noles?

3-1 and 8+ to go!

LET’S GO ORANGE!!!

Everyone keeps talking about how their back is up against a wall, but it was last week as well at home against Louisville and they fell behind very quickly. I think it’s important we get off to a fast start and score early.

Fingers crossed. This is the classic lucy with the football for charlie brown. Every time we get some sort of momentum and think it's time to proceed forward, lucy shows up and pulls the ball out from under our feet. Hopefully we can actually get this W today. Cautiously optimistic.

Very well said. Good post.

I was hoping this to be much longer, at least longer than the counter argument!

Another good post, SWC. What concerns me is that, just like your post, it's probably more about FSU than it is us and what we can do. We're not a team, at least right now, that can impose our will on another team. Our D is the shining star, but we need to make it easier on our offense by getting some turnovers. I REALLY like our chances if we can get out of the gate early. If that happens, FSU players will likely begin packing it in, thinking "here we go again". The last thing we want this struggling team to do is must up some confidence (and giving their fans a reason to cheer).

I use the term "eternally hopeful". You can still acknowledge reality but it doesn't permit over-confidence.
