- One measure of a coach is the ability to tailor his game plan to his talent. It took a lot of courage for Dino Babers to decide to change his whole offensive concept in mid-season and turn us into a dominant running team. He realized the potential of a Garrett Shrader offense, handing off to the best running back in America, (Sean Tucker), or keeping it as the best running quarterback in America, dropping back for a play-action pass or rolling out with a run-pass option, all of it led by a veteran offensive line and the great Chris Elmore as a lead blocker. That offense came into its own against Florida State and we scored 30 points in the last 36 minutes of that game, which translates to 50 points for the whole game against a team that probably still out-ranks the Deacons in athletic talent. For years I’ve argued that a two running back retro-offense would take modern defenses, who are used to defending against the spread, by surprise and that we could still throw the ball from it. Wake has faced some good offenses, but nothing like this one.

- And our offense is only going to get better each week as the players get more and more used to working with each other. Our long passing game will return and the opposition will get burned by it. That pop pass to the tight end will start connecting and be a big weapon in the red zone. And, as our offense gets more and more versatile, Sean Tucker will get more and more productive. Against Florida State he had 21 yards on 9 carries in our first four possessions against Florida State. Then we started to open the offense up and he gained 81 yards on 15 carries. He is also a pass catching threat when we start using our short passing attack. He can run with power but you really want him in space.

- Our defense is the 12th best in the country in total yards, (285 a game), 36th against the run (118), 15th against the pass (167) and 40th in scoring, (21 points per game). We are 5th in the country in tackles for a loss ((43 for 161 yards) 3rd in sacks (20 for 110 yards). Basically we are putting up the numbers on defense that defenses put up against us last year. Sam Hartman doesn’t have the mobility of Travis Jordan and we may be able to get to him even if they do allow holding. Wake Forest hasn’t seen anything like our offense and they haven’t seen anything like our defense.

- Trebor Pena is a ticking time bomb.

- Maybe the refs will ‘protect’ Wake to give the ACC a chance at the playoffs. Or they may realize that Wake isn’t going to make the playoff anyway and be stung by last weeks criticism so maybe we’ll get a few calls in this one.

- We are due to get some turnovers….turnovers…turnovers…

- Is Wake Forest really any better than Liberty? I don’t see it.

- Our guys didn’t like losing 14-38 to this team last year and they are on a revenge tour this year.

- You can’t look at it too many times:

3-2 and 7+ to go!

LET’S GO ORANGE!!!

I imagine historically we have a much better record against private schools than public schools although I don’t know how I go about proving that assumption. That we beat Wake seems more possible the closer we get to game time, given how the line on this game has moved this week I am not the only one!
