- Because we were a good team in disguise vs. Penn State and Northwestern. They were a bit of a Dagwood sandwich for us in our first two games- just a bit too big to fit into our mouths while we were breaking in a new coaching staff, a new quarterback, a new receiving corps, a new left side of the line, etc. We took off the disguise against poor Wagner, who never knew what hit them. Yes, they were an FCS team but we’ve played FCS teams before and it was 41-24, 21-14, 28-17. This was a legitimate 54-0. Our defense never gave the Seahawks a chance to do anything. On offense the coaches corrected a mistake and, under Terrel Hunt we started scoring every time we had the ball. We can now run, use the run to set up the pass and have a quarterback who can make something out of a busted play. You don’t want to play us right now.
- Tulane is 2-1 but they have played Jackson State, South Alabama and Louisiana Tech. They lost to South Alabama, a team that went 2-10 last year.
- Much has been made of the green Wave’s +5 in turnover ratio this year. They were +6 vs. Jackson State and have been -1 since.
- Orleans Darkwa is back but he’s not really having a good year, averaging 3.5 yard per carry vs. small-time competition. Ryan Grant is the real deal but he’s one guy. Any defense should be able to take one guy out of the equation. And we don’t even know if Cairo Santos will be there.
- Our defense is going to be a good one. They and the O-line just needed to co-ordinate things better and they are doing that now. The least will be closed up and the big plays are coming.
- Terrel Hunt is the real deal, no illusions. When Marvin graves emerged from a group of contenders for the quarterback position back in 1990, Bud Poliquin wrote that “In this world, there is Gladys Knight and then there the Pips.” Marvin Graves was Gladys Knight and the other guys were the Pips. Terrel Hunt is the Gladys Knight of 2013. The Syracuse attack is going to be dynamic again.
- The SU running game is starting to gain traction. Smith and Gulley can get it done. Morris has a burning fuse on him. And Hunt gives us an extra dimension. I see a 300 yard game coming.
- Ashton Broyld is having a productive year so far with 18 catches for 145 yards. But I see a real bust-out game coming. And pretty soon we are going to see Brisley Estime say goodbye to a last defender and beam himself into the end zone.
- The ACC is just over the horizon and we are putting the pedal to the metal.
1-2 with 9, (or 10?) to do
LET’S GO ORANGE!
