- As I mentioned in the accompanying post to this, both teams have played almost nothing but close games. This isn’t going to be a blow-out. There’s no reason we can’t make those 1-2 plays that would win, instead of 1-2 that will lose it. - Pitt’s victims are Youngstown State, Akron, Virginia Tech, Virginia and Georgia Tech. Does that scare anybody? - An interesting point was made on the radio today: Coaches Shafer and Narduzzi put their heads together as young coaches and came up with most of the concepts that they are using now together. Coach Shafer even said he’s chuckled looking at Pitt’s films, remembering when he an Pat had talked about something he saw. Whatever they do, pour guys have seen it and they’ve probably been practicing against it all year. - Big, scary Tyler Boyd is averaging only 9.7 yards per catch. Does that scare anyone? And we may be seeing less of Julian Whigham. Meanwhile Rodney Williams will be back. - Qadree Ollison had big games against Youngstown and the Hokies, but averaged under 4 yards a carry in the other games and is “trending downward” per Pitt blogger Cardiac Hill. Let’s continue that trend. - Pitt likes to get the ball to their best players, which is laudable but maybe also easier to defend against. - All the dire predictions about this Syracuse team, (i9nclduing mine in the previous spot), make the perennial fan’s assumption that all we are going to see from a player or a team is what we’ve already seen. The great thing about college sports vs. the pros is that players- and teams- have a chance to get better as they go along and gain more experience. I’ve compared it to a time-lapse flower blooming. Coach Lester told Brent Axe to day that Eric Dungey graded about 40% on his reads against USF and 83% against Virginia. He said that as he continued to improve not only would he be doing things better but he’ll be dong fewer things by himself and getting the ball to Fredericks, Phillips, Estime and Ismael more. If you were to overplay graphs of the quality of our opposition and the development of our team, might you not find the Syracuse line moving above the opponent line at some point, even if they are both moving up? 3-3 with 6 or 7 to be done….. LET’S GO ORANGE!!!
