- They are still another team that has to win to save their coach’s job. USF apparently liked their coach. If the Virginia players do too, this could be another date with a buzzsaw.
- OK, so they are 1-4. The FBS teams they have played are 22-5. Only Boise State has beaten them badly. They gave UCLA, Notre Dame and Pitt plenty of trouble. We think we’re good because we played an unfocused LSU team relatively close. They’ve done the same thing three times.
- Led by Matt Johns, the Cavs are averaging 246 yards passing a game. Defending the pass has been a huge Achilles heel for Syracuse. We are giving up 255 yards a game. If they get in trouble, they can just go to the air to beat us.
- We think Brisley Estime, Erv Phillips and Jordan Fredericks are exciting. When you look at Virginia’s Taquan Mizzell, you are looking at a five star talent who is a threat running with the ball or going out as a receiver. His nickname is “Smoke”.
- We think Riley Dixon is quite a punter but the ACC’s leading punter is Virginia’s Nick Conte with a 46.8 average. Ian Frye kicked 22 field goals last year. Olamide Zaccheaus is a dangerous kick returner, averaging 30 yards on punts and 21 on kick-offs Maurice Canaday also has a 74 yard punt return TD. In a close game, these guys are major players.
- Virginia has 13 fifth year seniors. We are one of the youngest teams in the nation, which is proably a big reason why they played so poorly against USF after an encouraging performance vs. LSU. Young teams are a box of candy- you never know what you’ll get. .
- The thread “Talent” contains a debate over the relative talent on SU and their opponents. High school ratings were presented as proof that there is still a talent gap between SU and most of its opponents. I challenged the notion that high school ratings are a precise measure of talent. I see them as an estimate of a player’s abilities at a particular moment in time and felt that college records are a better measure of college players. But suppose the proposition is correct? I went on the Rivals site and gave teams points based on the number of 3, 4 and 5 star recruits they’ve brought in since 2011, (a redshirt senior would have been part of that class). Here is a list of the star points for Syracuse and each of this year’s FBS opponents:
Florida State 421
Louisiana State 407
Clemson 378
Louisville and South Florida 288
North Carolina State and Virginia 276
Pittsburgh 235
Boston College 207
Wake Forest 202
Syracuse 196
Central Michigan 42
Based on this we are rooting for a 2-10 team that pulled off a mild upset over Wake Forest but is now about to lose the third of nine losses in a row to close the season.
