Most fans are aware that a short term contract or one that is set to expire before a player’s eligibility would expire could affect recruiting high school players.

In today’s world one might also wonder the potential impact of a sunsetting contract on current players on the roster.  Will they look to the portal if they sense instability in the current coaches?   Will a coach with a sunsetting contract be able to attract player in the portal to address current needs?

And, just as important, will assistant coaches be inclined to stay without some degree of security that comes from a HC with a multi-year contract?  White, Schmidt, Acuff, West, Monroe, Ligs, Anae and Beck are all guys I would look at if I was in need of coaches.  The coaching carousel that we know focuses on the movement of head coaches, but every new head coach is also tasked with putting together a staff.  Do I stay in one one of the snowiest destinations with a HC who only has a year or two remaining on his contract (and a fan base that seems to always have their pitchforks and lanterns at the ready) or do I consider an offer from a HC that has a nice new multi-year contract?

I wonder what the impact on our staff would be if Bronco Mendenhall came out of retirement for a new HC job?   I heard his name mentioned in connection with an opening out west.
