Just a cautionary tale as to why we can't take this opponent lightly.

Looking back at history in games against Rutger's, no doubt feeling very confident going in, here are some results that should keep us on our toes.

February 2, 2002 at the RAC Rutgers 82 Syracuse 74
Jerome Coleman had a career high 27 points that night and we were out rebounded 45-39. SU had a 17-5 record coming into that game.

January 29, 2003 at the RAC Rutgers 68 Syracuse 65
Jerome Coleman does it again going off for 31 points, 26 in the second half a career high(for a half). The Knigties get a bank shot three along the way and the best team in Syracuse history falls in Jersey. We were ranked #24 at the time and a 3.5 favorite to win by the odds makers. We turned the ball over 17 times compared to 11 for our opponent. Melo was assessed a technical foul along the way that night. SU was 13-2 & RU was 8-9 coming into that game. After a made shot by Lamizana we disdained a time out, Melo missed badly from inside the arc, Rutgers rebounded the ball as time expired.

February 10, 2004 at the Dome SU escaped 63-61 # 25 SU was 15-4 unranked RU was 13-7
Quincy Douby missed consecutive three point tries or this could have ended disastrously for the Orange. Hak had his 10th double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds to aid the cause. Josh Pace was also a key player for us scoring 12 grabbing 5 boards, dishing out 5 assists having 2 steals along with 2 blocked shots. SU was in an offensive funk during the period when this game was played.

January 24, 2005 at the RAC SU 86 RU 84 Similar to today's contest SU was highly rated. Strutting into the RAC as the #4 team in the country with a 19-1 record we turned to Terrence Roberts for salvation. His three point play with 7.2 seconds left in the contest pulled out a win in front of over 8,000 delierious fans on both sides of the aisle. Quincy Douby again had a chance to be a hero but his three with 3.8 seconds left bounced in and out and SU escaped once more from the evil pit that is the RAC. Billy Edelin's 14 off the bench was a lift. Hak & GMAC led us with 21 points apiece. Josh had another typical Josh Pace night with 14 points, seven rebounds a team high 7 assists. We were the first D1 team to reach 20 wins. Another great escape for SU.

February 1, 2006 at the Dome SU (16-6) 86 RU(13-8) 84 It would take a rare Terrence Roberts three point shot with 3 seconds left in overtime to prevent an embarrassing home loss in front of over 20,000 fans in a game we were favored to win. Quincy Douby was once again on the losing side of another close game in this series, this time he had a career high 41 points and a Carrier Dome record for an opponent. His 9 three's were a personnel best. JB opened his presser with this statement, "“Quincy Douby was as good as anybody I’ve ever seen in here since this building has been opened." DNic & Devo led SU with 24 & 21 respectively.

February 19, 2011 in the Dome Syracuse (22-6) 84 Rutgers (13-13) 80 The 17/20 ranked Orangemen were once again taken to overtime by the lightly regarded Scarlet Knight's. This time there were nearly 29,000 interested souls in attendance under the big top. As time was winding down Rick Jackson made one of two free throws to tie the game at 70. As in the other close games Rutger's had another chance to win at the end but James Beatty's shot rimmed out and we headed to OT. In the overtime Rutgers held the lead until we rattled off 5 straight points to take an 83-80 advantage, a lead which we would not relinquish. Rick Jackson had a double-double (18 & 12) KJo led with 21, both Brandon & CJ followed with 17 points apiece.

That's six tough games in the last decade and a very tough one less than a calandar year from today.

The RAC will be packed with mostly Red by accounts that I have read.

This is everything to them and that place will be rocking.

Don't ever take an opponent lightly and especially not this one given the history in the series.

No doubt. Everyone we play will be energized to beat the #2 team in the land.
This team has a maturity and focus though, that leads me to believe they won't take anyone lightly.

Rutger's is 10 & 5 at the RAC this season taking down nationally ranked Florida 85-83 in two overtimes and tough minded Notre Dame 65-58 on January 16
