I think they probably get forced to do something.

Of course the SEC/B10 teams want seeding,

I think spilt the difference with Seed/Bye

Conf winners get in. Then seed and any Conf winner either gets a bye or a Home game.

Reality is Texas did not earn a bye no matter that they would be seeded 3rd

Oregon
Ga
ND
Then pick between Tex/PSU/OSU?ASU

Georgia was one of about 10 plays away from 3 losses and a bubble team now they are the 2 seed.

Also dumb that Boise earned a bye by beating an AVG BYU and UNLV twice

Hate ND all you want but how do they rank PSU ahead of ND?

ND beat TAM/GT/Army/Lou
PSu beat ILL

Just make the 2 best conf champs the 1 & 2 seeds and the only ones who get a bye. Most years that will be the B1G and SEC. Then 3-14 seeded with 3 next best conference champs and 9 at larges, again keeping the B1G and SEC happy.

1. Oregon
2. UGA
4. Penn State vs 16. Clemson
3. Texas vs 13. Miami
6. Ohio State vs 12. ASU
5. Notre Dame vs 11. Bama
8. Indiana vs 9. Boise State
7. Tennessee vs 10. SMU

No byes. Everybody has to win the same number of games. 16 teams with auto-bids to all the conference champs. If you are a conference in a division, your champion should get into the playoff. That makes your conference schedule part of the tournament.

Get rid of the conf champ seeds and just go 1-12. Or hopefully 1-16 soon. Ped state and indiana should literally be 10-12 seeds. Indiana should have been the last team in (imo should have never been in)
1-16 makes sense and they should abandon conference title games. I'm sure the increase in TV money going to 16 will make the dollars work.

Screw the SEC and Big10. Screw Notre Dame. If you win the conference championship? You are in the playoff. 6x2=12. Win your conference championship? You get a bye. Make the losers play each other. Over time, the money evens out and recruits/talent would start to spread out as well.

To be clear, i understand there is absolutely NO CHANCE this would ever happen but, regardless, it is operationally correct.

They need to make ND join a conference, and not allow independents in. They played a garbage schedule this year and were allowed in. Hope they get destroyed in the first round.

I'm no ND lover, but that was a real schedule made unexpectedly worse by the struggles of FSU and @USC.
They won at TAMU, beat (unexpectedly) undefeated Navy and Army, solid Louisville and Georgia Tech.

Virginia and Purdue admittedly stink.

ND is about where they should be this year.

They need to join a conference, however.

I know. They normally have a pretty tough schedule, but if fell apart this year. I just hate ND haha.

noone hates ND more than me. They will annihilate Indiana

I like having the Top 4 ranked teams get a Bye and the left over conference winners guaranteed a home game. That incentivises conference championship games while also rewarding good teams. I think most people would agree that Boise and Arizona State probably don't "deserve" a bye, but would still love to see them host a game

I'll be curious how many Indiana fans will infiltrate South Bend for this once in a Hoosier football fan lifetime game.

Not that it will matter, but ND season ticket holders have been known to sell to the highest bidder (Nebraska and Georgia games, which ended up looking like neutral site matchups).

Im sure they will try like hell. I mean why not. When are they ever gonna sniff the playoff again?

I've been saying all year that I don't understand how PSU keeps getting so much love and respect in the polls.

Notre Dame with a break or two here and there could win it all.

ND is the money pick for sure at 11-1.

But given all the teams have issues so is Clemson/SMU at 40-1

I dont see OSU/Tex winning with the QB play they are getting

I love CFB, but man, what kinda sport allows 10-15 teams/programs to start the season ahead of all of the others? It's been that way forever.

Penn State does not begin the season on the same footing as ... say Arizona.
Alabama starts miles ahead of ... say Maryland.
Honestly, Oklahoma gets a head start on the season over ... say Miami (FL).

I don't like the KC Chiefs, but they begin 0-0 just like the Saints.
Same with the Dodgers and Reds.

Why can't CFB get its crap together?

I have been saying this or years. No polls till October. Will never happen but it would help this issue big time

Polls sure it gets skewed but the committee didn't start until many weeks in, and it did the same thing.

Top four teams get a bye
No more freebies for conference winners, they already get their reward by getting in

No reason for SMU to have played Saturday under that system - they could have gotten knocked out, and there was no way they were climbing into the top. There’s gotta be some benefit to winning the conference championship, beyond “maybe you can move up a slot or two in the final rankings! At best!” Because SMU wasn’t climbing into the top 4 in any scenario on Saturday. (And Boise State was in the same situation).

If you’re willing to say any conference championship participant who is a playoff seed going into championship weekend cannot be knocked out - great. Your model works then. It’s not an improvement…but it works. Ideally we’d throw conference championship games in the dustbin of history, but it’s clear conferences $till want them - whatever changes are made are going to need to ensure conference championship games are still attractive to the participants.

I actually don't mind the preseason polls. I like having a frame of reference and starting off point to get a rough feel for how good teams are.

In the examples you gave, everything organically sorted itself out. Arizona and Maryland had losing seasons. Oklahoma played its way out of the Top 25.

Without them we wouldn't have had our victory over #1 Nebraska in 1984 or #5 Florida in 1991, etc.

If they are in before the Conference Championship and it's a good game, say with in 10-14 points, then yes they should be in. If you say all teams that play Championship are in, then the system is bad.

Kinda my point, chief.

If SMU isn’t playing for a bye, and there is ANY chance they could get knocked out of the playoff - there’s no reason to have that conference championship game. Because in that scenario, SMU has absolutely nothing to gain - but something to lose. Your preferred solution requires no conference championship games in order to work - therefore your preferred solution is also a bad system. It “fixes” nothing - it just breaks other stuff from the current bad system.

Unless massive structural changes are made to conferences, there isn’t a good system.
