When talking tradition and placing our time in perspective, it's good to look at the past. I was going through some old newspapers and came across this story in a November 25, 1917 Nashville Tennessean:

"Syracuse Win Featured By Long Runs

East Lansing, MI Nov. 24
Long Runs, Several Of Them For More Than Half The Length Of The Field, enabled Syracuse's football eleven to defeat the light Michigan Agricultural College team, 21 to 7, here this afternoon. The Aggies, however, put up one of the hardest fights they have made this season. In the first period, Meehan, the Syracuse quarterback, after a few minutes of play, shot around end and slipping through tacklers, ran 65 yards for a touchdown. A snappy forward pass, Archer to Ramsey, produced a touchdown for the home team in the second period. The easterners' superior weight told again in the third period when they ploughed through the line twice for touchdowns. Meehan kicked all three goals."

Michigan Agricultural College became Michigan State and the game demonstrated the early 20th century strength of their scheduling. Great road win for SU in an era where travel was still a great adventure. Finished 8-1-1 that season with wins over Rutgers, Michigan State, and Nebraska. SU has a long history with many eras to remember and honor. That year, SU's only loss was to Pittsburgh, who finished undefeated under Pop Warner. SU would have been ranked in the top ten that year under today's ratings structure. SU may be struggling this year but good times/bad times are cyclic with better times ahead. Gotta hope anyhow...
