[QUOTE="SWC75, post: 1130669, member: 289"] THE SYSTEM: The offense wins a play if they get a third of the way to a first down on first down, half way to a first down on second down or gets a first down on third or fourth down. Otherwise the defense wins. Any score is a win for the team that scores. Any turnover is a win for the team that winds up with the ball. The kicking team wins a kick-off where the other team winds up with the ball from their own 25 in to their goal line: outside of that and the receiving team won. The kicking team wins any punt that produces a new +40 yard change in the line of scrimmage or forces the other team to begin from their 20 yard line in. Anny successful place kick is a win for the kicking team. I’ve put the yards to go in parenthesis if it’s other than 10 yards. Penalties are simply tacked onto the play before the play is evaluated if they didn’t nullify it. If the penalty did nullify the play or was a dead ball foul, it’s listed separately. CENTRAL MICHIGAN When Syracuse had the ball: KO- CM 25, CM 28, CM 26, CM 23, CM 35, CM 25 (There was also the fumbled kick-off, which went to the CM 19 but I’ll count that below as a fumble while CM had the ball) SU 3 CM 3 P- 38 to CM 3, 33 to CM 9, 47 to CM 8 SU 3 CM 0 FG- 42NG 23G, 45NG SU 1 CM 2 XP- G, G, G, G, G SU 5 CM 0 Total for kicking game: Syracuse 12 Central Michigan 5 1st rush- 20, 2, -3, 1, 1, 6, 7, 2, 8, 0, 0, 1, 12, 4, 3, 12, 9, 3TD, 7, 4, -2, 23, 3(8) SU 13 CM 11 (The bubble screen that blew up the first drive was listed by ESPN as a 3 yard loss on a run by Adrian Fleming so I assume the pass was backwards and I listed it among the runs) 1st pass- 9, 12, 15, 3, 3, I, 20, I, I, I, 2 SU 4 CM 7 First Down total: Syracuse 17 Central Michigan 18 2nd rush- 7(13), 4(4), 3(8), 2(2), 3(7), 36(12), 5, -2, 9(9), 1(7), 2(3), 2(6), 7(12), 53(8), 3(5) SU 10 CM 5 2nd pass- 14(8), I, 8(9), 16(3), I, 4, I, 16, I SU 4 CM 5 Second Down total: Syracuse 14 Central Michigan 10 3rd run- 4(1), 8(6), 8(6), 2(1), 1(2) SU 4 CM 1 3rd pass- I, 12(9), I, 3(4), 4TD, I, I, 14(6), 6(9), 6(4), 7 SU 4 CM 7 Third Down total: Syracuse 8 Central Michigan 8 4th run- 3(1), 1TD SU 2 CM 0 4th pass- none Fourth Down total: Syracuse 2 Central Michigan 0 Total for plays from scrimmage: Syracuse 41 Central Michigan 36 Running plays: Syracuse 29 Central Michigan 17 Passing plays: Syracuse 12 Central Michigan 19 Penalties, (not added on to play): SU 3 CM 2 Turnovers: none Total for penalties and turnovers: Syracuse 3 Central Michigan 2 Total when Syracuse had the ball: Syracuse 56 Central Michigan 43 When Central Michigan Had the Ball: KO- SU 20, SU 25, 52 yards to SU 28 after safety (I decided to evaluate the kickoff after the safety using the same rules I do for punts: since it went a net 40 yards+ it was a successful play for CM) SU 0 CM 3 P- 41 to SU 31, 30 to SU 31, 48 to SU 5, 45 to SU 26, 36 to CM 47, 36 to SU 14 SU 2 CM 4 FG 26g SU 0 CM 1 XP none Total for kicking game: Syracuse 2 Central Michigan 8 1st rush- -7, -1, 8, 0, 3(5), 3, 6, 8, -3, 0, 3, 5, 2, -2 SU 9 CM 5 1st pass- 16, 5, I, 7, I, I, I, 10, 4, I, 35(25) SU 5 CM 6 First Down total: Syracuse 14 Central Michigan 11 2nd rush- 5(2), 3, 0, 5(3), 3(14), 10(12) SU 3 CM 3 2nd pass- 6(5), 19(15), I, -2, 10(4), -7, 6(2), I -3(safety), 11, I, 20(6), I, 3, I SU 9 CM 6 Second Down total: Syracuse 12 Central Michigan 9 3rd run- 11(2) ` SU 0 CM 1 3rd pass- 9(11), I, I, -8, I, 6(7), 4(5), I, I SU 9 CM 0 Third Down total: Syracuse 9 Central Michigan 1 4th run- none 4th pass- 6(2), I SU 1 CM 1 Fourth Down total: Syracuse 1 Central Michigan 1 Total for plays from scrimmage: Syracuse 36 Central Michigan 22 Running plays: Syracuse 12 Central Michigan 9 Passing plays: Syracuse 24 Central Michigan13 Penalties (not added onto play): SU 3 CM 3 Turnovers: SU 2 CM 0 (We recovered two CM fumbles) Total for penalties and turnovers: SU 5 CM 3 Total when Central Michigan had the ball: Syracuse 43 Central Michigan 33 Overall kicking game total: SU 14 CM 13 Overall plays from scrimmage total: SU 77 CM 58 Running plays: SU 41 CM 26 Passing plays: SU 36 CM 32 Overall penalties and turnovers: SU 8 CM 5 Game Total: Syracuse 99 Central Michigan 76 Comments: We won both sides of the ball. There were some big plays: Runs of 20, 36 and 53 yards, a 20 yard pass, two big turnovers and a safety. But the stat that jumps out at is is that Central Michigan’s Cooper Rush dropped back to pass on third down nine times and never got a first down out of it. I think it helped us to be facing a conventional offense with a pocket passer. I also think it helped that CM’s leading rusher, (Thomas Rawls) and leading receiver, (Titus Davis), were out. They wouldn’t have scored 37 points but they might have made it a more competitive game. We’ve done pretty well stopping the opposition on first down, (35-24 but poorly on running plays after that (12-26). A lot of that is Villanova’s John Robertson and his slippery running style. Central Michigan didn’t have a guy like that so we did better against them. We’ve done very well against third down pass attempts (14-5) but that’s because we were 9-0 vs. Central Michigan. No other stats jump out at me but if they did, they’d be similarly inconclusive at this point.
