Through 11 games, even with all the strategies about when to defer, when to punt and the various turnovers, etc, there’s been no net difference between where we get the ball and how far we have to score or even the number of possessions. We’ve kicked the ball 156 times and got what we wanted out of it 129 times, (83%). Our opposition has kicked the ball just 151 times and got what they wanted 127 times, (84%). Big plays often decide games but were +15 there and are 5-6 on the season. There weren’t enough big plays in the games we’ve played for them to be decisive. It’s hard to win if the other team is dominating the incremental but consistent plays, (consistently good rather than occasionally great) Go figure: we are 95-100 on first down runs on offense but 85-46 on second down runs. Defensively we are 99-95 on first down runs but 38-84 on second down runs. I guess defenses are more ready for first down runs and have to think about the pass more on second down. We’re also pretty good at stopping third and fourth down passes, 69-41. Those are two very good downs to dominate. But we are 32-51 against the run on those downs.
