THE SYSTEM: The offense wins a play if they get a third of the way to a first down on first down, half way to a first down on second down or gets a first down on third or fourth down. Otherwise the defense wins. Any score is a win for the team that scores. Any turnover is a win for the team that winds up with the ball. The kicking team wins a kick-off where the other team winds up with the ball from their own 25 in to their goal line: outside of that and the receiving team won. The kicking team wins any punt that produces a new +40 yard change in the line of scrimmage or forces the other team to begin from their 20 yard line in. Anny successful place kick is a win for the kicking team. I’ve put the yards to go in parenthesis if it’s other than 10 yards. Penalties are simply tacked onto the play before the play is evaluated if they didn’t nullify it. If the penalty did nullify the play or was a dead ball foul, it’s listed separately.

Comments: This was a classic example of a game that was won and lost on big plays and mistakes. Not only did Syracuse outgain Maryland by a significant margin but each team won the same the number of plays: 91. We had eight plays of more than 20 yards but didn’t score on any of them. Maryland had only four such plays but scored twice on them. They also scored on an 88 yard interception return and set up a touchdown and a field goal with a blocked punt and a fumble. A huge reason why all of our yardage failed to produce points was our record on third down passes. We converted on the first one with a 20 yard pass from Terrel Hunt to Ben Lewis on the third play from scrimmage of the game. That was our last third down conversion by pass. We whiffed on the next six in a row. We had the ball for 32:14 and got off 79 plays. Maryland had the ball for 27:46 and got off 58 plays. That;s one play every 24.48 seconds for us and 2.45 plays per minute vs. one play every 28.72 seconds for them and 2.09 plays per minute. MacDonald’s goal was 3.33 plays per minute.
