If you watched every play of every game this season, you saw SU obtain a result favorable to them 1300 times and the opposition obtain a result favorable to them 1195 times. That’s an average of +8 for SU per game. It seems small but I guess you could look at as if we got to run 8 extra plays a game- plays that worked. That would make a difference. Of course, there are other factors, such and how successful those plays were, (like a 67 yard touchdown run, a safety, a turnover a blocked kick), and their timeliness and are not reflected in these numbers. It’s still interesting to look at how many plays we ’won’ and ’lost’ to see the degree of dominance. The fact is, most of our games are very competitive.

Both sides had an emphasis on first down rushing but we did better. Such plays, of course, can set up more adventurous plays. They can also set up second and then third and long. We were extremely successful on first down passes: 108-66 and our passing success declined on subsequent downs to 93-90 and then 58-71, obviously because the opposition was focusing more on the pass than they would on first down. If we passed more on first down, our efficiency would probably go down somewhat but it would probably still be higher than subsequent downs. What is interesting is that we were as successful on second down runs, (108-61), as first down passes. Defensive expectations may be a factor there, too. The opposition had the same pattern of success on both plays. The opposition actually did better on third down than we did but had fewer of them because we had more successful plays before that, especially on first down. Doug Marrone was often criticized for being too conservative but we tried for it on fourth down 19 times to 8 for the opposition. Both sides did well, (a total of 18-9) but then you don’t normally try for it on fourth down unless you think you have a good chance or it is a desperation play right at the end of a game. There’s always the perennial question of cost-benefit on such plays: would going for it more often produce a net positive or are the failures most costly than the successes could make up for? We criticized the special teams all year but if you add up the kicking plays for both teams, we came out ahead 200-191.
