We can put the “foot” in football. But we are -80 on plays from scrimmage. We think of ourselves as a passing team but we’ve actually done better on running plays (219-229) than passing plays (252-322). Offensive productivity is based on several factors. “Winning Plays” measures how consistently you move the ball, which tends to be based on dominating the line of scrimmage and efficient quarterbacking. Related to that but not precisely the same are 3rd and 4th down conversions, which allow you to keep the ball. Then there are explosive plays which do more than just “win the play. Then there are turnovers, effective place-kicking, punting and kick-offs and their coverage, which determine how far you have to go to score. Then there are punt and kick-off returns, which determine the same thing and actually capable of producing scores themselves. So are blocked kicks, (we had one against Wake, but it wasn’t enough.) Finally there is “stringing it together”, a baseball term treating to hits. It’s great to have good plays but having them in a row, uninterrupted by serious errors is what spins yards into gold. We did a good job of competing this year, play to play. But we had trouble stringing successful plays together, didn’t have nearly as many explosive plays as our opposition and just couldn’t avoid or produce turnovers. We wound up -12 in turnovers, (by comparison the 2001 SU team that was out-gain but went 10-3 was +15). My final count of explosive plays is 55 by Syracuse for 12 TDs vs. 65 by our opponents for 26 TDs. So it also matters just how explosive your explosive plays are: Our guys are getting caught or headed off at the pass: their band plays when their guys get loose. In the first 9 games, we actually had more explosive plays: 42-36, but for fewer touchdowns (9-14) . In the last three we had 13 Eps to 29 which produced only 3 scores to 12 for our opponents. We improve don 1st down because we ran the ball better. We declined on 2nd, 3rd and 4th down despite running the ball better one very down because our passing attack declined on those three downs. We are a prolific passing team but not really an efficient one. I think the big loss was Amba Etta-Tawo. Steve Ismael caught more balls this year and was very good but he rarely showed the big play explosiveness that AET constantly had. Everybody loves Eric Dungey, (and I’m part of everybody), but I suspect Danny DeVito, once he’s really ready, will prove a significant upgrade who will show us what a Dino Babers offense is really supposed to look like. In fact this year our running plays were more consistently successful than our passing plays (48.9% successful vs. 43.9%) and our defense was more consistently success in scrimmage plays and our offense (52.0% vs. 48.8%). Our defense was about the same as last year on 1st and 2nd downs but substantially improved on 3rd and 4th down, (which Dino on his show attributed to success of 1st and 2nd downs but not really in this case). We fell back against the kicking game, largely because Brisley Estime was replaced by Steve Riley, (who actually did a fair job, especially at the end of the season – but Brisley led the nation in punt returns last year.)
