Again, the concept is to keep track of how often each team got the minimum they would have wanted from a play. On first down, you want to get at least a third of the way to a first down. On second down, you want to get at least halfway to a first down. On third or fourth down, you want to get a first down. If the offense achieves those goals they have won the play. If not, the defense has won the play. Offensive scoring plays are wins for them. Turnovers are wins for the defense. Penalties get tacked onto the result of the play if that’s the way they were marked off. If they canceled the play or were dead ball fouls, I kept track of them separately. Kickoffs are wins fro the kicking team if the other team starts it’s possession from the 25 in, (per the new touchback rule). Punts are wins for the kicking team if they produce a net +40 yard change or the other team starts from their 20 in. Placekicks are offensive wins if they go through the uprights. Any other result is a win for the defense. If the resulting tally of plays won is close, the game wasn’t decided by one team dominating the other. It was decided on big plays, mistakes and breaks, (as most games are). When SU had the ball: Kickoffs: 25, 30, 22, 10, 23 (SU 4 SB 1) Punts 41(37), 27(47), 39(23), 28(20) (SU 2 SB 2) Field Goals: NG, NG (SU 0 SB 2) Extra Points: G, G, G, G (SU 4 SB0) Total for Kicking Game: Syracuse 10 Stony Brook 5 1st down runs: 0, 2, 11, 7, 13, 3, 6, 19, 2, 7, 1, 6, 0, 6, 2, 3, 0, 0, 10, 4, 6, 3 (SU 11 SB 11) 1st down passes I, 8, 3, I 13, 2(15), I, 3, 27, 12, 25(25), 19 (SU 6 SB 6) 2nd down runs: 2(4), -1, 9(2), 22(3), 0, 9, 4(7), 7(4), 5(7), 2(4), 3(4) (SU 9 SB 2) 2nd down passes: I, 61, I, 8(7), 1(8), I, 1(9), 7(14), 22, 23(13), 14(8), 4(10), I (SU 6 SB 7) 3rd down runs: 2(2), 3, 7(7), 3(1), 4(2), 1(2), 1(1) (SU 5 SB 2) 3rd down passes: I, I, I, I, 31(7), 38(8), I, 5(6), 21(6) (SU 3 SB 6) 4th down runs -1 (SU 0 SB 1) 4th down passes: I (SU 0 SB 1) Total for SU scrimmage plays: Syracuse 40 Stony Brook 36 Penalties: SU 5 SB 7 Turnovers: SU 1 SB 2 Total for Penalties and Turnovers: Syracuse 6 Stony Brook 9 When Stony Brook had the ball Kickoffs: 37, 35, 15 (SU 2 SB 1) Punts: 35(22), 32(20), 34(22), 28(SB45), 33(SB42), 46(40), 46(43), 53(22) (SU 4 SB 4) Field Goals: G (SU 0 SB 1) Extra Points: G, G (SU 0 SB 2) Total for Kicking Game: Syracuse 6 Stony Brook 8 1st down runs: 5, 13, 2, 10, 4, 8, 3, 0 , 2, -1, 11, 0, 2, 4, 1, 4, 14, 4, 10, 5(16), 5, 4 (SU 9 SB 13) 1st down passes: 63, 12, I (SU 1 SB 2) 2nd down runs: 7(2), -1, 4(13), 3(6), 3(19), 4(6), -3, 3(6), 1(5) (SU 5 SB 4) 2nd down passes: I, 14(6), I, I, I, I, 5(6) (SU 5 SB 2) 3rd down runs: -2, 4(2), 11, 71(3), 0, 2(13), 0 (SU 4 SB 3) 3rd down passes: I, I, I, I, I, I, I (SU 5 SB 0) 4th down runs none 4th down passes: none Total for SB scrimmage plays: Syracuse 31 Stony Brook 24 Total for the Game: Syracuse won 93 plays to 82 for Stony Brook. We primarily won the game on defense. The offense gained a lot of yards but kept the Seawolves in the game with two missed field goals and two goal line failures. Stony Brook gained 42 yards on their first 6 first down runs, (7.0) and 68 in their final 16, (4.3). They were 0 for 7 on third down passes. We had mixed results on first down runs but were fabulous on second down, (9-2), Nassib missed his first four third down throws but got some big ones, (31, 38, 21) after that. Despite Rene’s gaffe, the kick-off and punt numbers were good, (we were 6-3 when we kicked and 6-5 when they kicked). Our long drives didn’t always get scores but they gave Stony Brook a long field every time they got the ball in the second half. We gave up the two big plays but not much else and should have won by a lot more.
