On first down, you want to get at least a third of the way to a first down. On second down, you want to get at least halfway to a first down. On third or fourth down, you want to get a first down. Any other result is a win for the defense. If the resulting tally of plays won is close, the game wasn’t decided by one team dominating the other. It was decided on big plays, mistakes and breaks, (as most games are). We primarily won the game on defense. The offense gained a lot of yards but kept the Seawolves in the game with two missed field goals and two goal line failures. We had mixed results on first down runs but were fabulous on second down, (9-2), Nassib missed his first four third down throws but got some big ones, (31, 38, 21) after that. Despite Rene’s gaffe, the kick-off and punt numbers were good, (we were 6-3 when we kicked and 6-5 when they kicked). Our long drives didn’t always get scores but they gave Stony Brook a long field every time they got the ball in the second half.
