Again, the concept is to keep track of how often each team got the minimum they would have wanted from a play. On first down, you want to get at least a third of the way to a first down. On second down, you want to get at least halfway to a first down. On third or fourth down, you want to get a first down. If the offense achieves those goals they have won the play. If not, the defense has won the play. Offensive scoring plays are wins for them. Turnovers are wins for the defense. Penalties get tacked onto the result of the play if that’s the way they were marked off. If they canceled the play or were dead ball fouls, I kept track of them separately. Sacks are counted as passing plays. Kickoffs are wins for the kicking team if the other team starts it’s possession from the 25 in, (per the new touchback rule). Punts are wins for the kicking team if they produce a net +40 yard change or the other team starts from their 20 in. Placekicks are offensive wins if they go through the uprights. Any other result is a win for the defense. If the resulting tally of plays won is close, the game wasn’t decided by one team dominating the other. It was decided on big plays, mistakes and breaks, (as most games are). MINNESOTA When SU had the ball: Kickoffs: 19, 13, SU45 (onsides) (SU 2 MN 1) Punts: 35(42), 29(16), 51(7), 46(30), 37(38) (SU 3 MN 2) Field Goals: Good (SU 1 MN 0) Extra Points: Good, Good (SU 2 MN 0) Total for Kicking Game: Syracuse 8 Minnesota 3 1st down runs: 2, 5, 4, 4, 9, 3, 3, 3, 0, 2, 2, 0 (SU 4 MN 8) 1st down passes: 5, 24, 8, 4, I, I, I, 14, 9, 16, 19, -8, 5(15), 18, 22, 14 (SU12 MN 4) 2nd down runs: 8(8), 3(6), 9, 26(6), 0, 0, -2, -3, 7(8), 19(10) (SU 6 MN 4) 2nd down passes: I, 5(5), I, 13(10), 13(1), I, I, -4, 4(18), 2 (SU 3 MN 7) 3rd down runs: 7(2), 3(6), 5, 7(7), 9(14) (SU3 MN 7) 3rd down passes: -4, 9*8), I, 7(3), 13(17), 4(8) (SU3 MN 4) 4th down runs: none 4th down passes: 4(4) (SU 1 MN 0) Total for SU scrimmage plays: Syracuse 30 Minnesota 30 Penalties: Syracuse 9 Minnesota 8 (SU 8 MN 9) Turnovers: Syracuse 4 Minnesota 0 (SU 0 MN 4) Total for Penalties and Turnovers: Syracuse 8 Minnesota 13 When Minnesota had the ball: Kickoffs: 25, 17, 13, 17 (SU 0 MN 4) Punts: 40(38), 35(42), 32(49), 30(18), 48(17) (SU 2 MN 3) Field Goals: No Good, No Good, Goods (SU 2 MN 1) Extra Points: Good, Good (SU 0 MN 2) Total for Kicking Game: Syracuse 4 Minnesota 10 1st down runs: 7, 0, 5, 4, 2(2), 5, 3, -1, 5, 5, 3, 2, 11, 0, 0, 16, 4, 3, 6, -1, 0, 1, -2(V), -2(V) (SU 11 MN 13) 1st down passes: 24, I, 4(15), I, 11, I, I, I (SU 6 MN 2) 2nd down runs: 3(5), 1, 13(5), 5(7), 0, 1(2), 12, 7(6), 5(7), 5(9) (SU 2 MN 8) 2nd down passes: 7(3), 13(25), 7(5), 18(7), I 9(10), 6(11), I, 13, 34, I, -4, 8(11), 17(10) (4 MN 10) 3rd down runs: 1(5), 2(1), 3(2), 1(1), 0 (SU 2 MN 3) 3rd down passes: I, 40(2), I, I, -10, 14(8), I, I, 6(3), I (SU7 MN 3) 4th down runs: none 4th down passes: none Total for Minnesota scrimmage plays: Syracuse 32 Minnesota 39 Total for the Game: Syracuse ‘won’ 82 plays to 95 for Minnesota. We didn’t get dominated but we got outplayed. The kicking game wasn’t a factor, except for Minnesota’s two missed field goals that kept the game closer than it might have been. We did poorly on first down runs, ‘losing’ our last 7 attempts, thus creating second and long situations. But we did very well on first down passes (12-4- but that doesn’t include the first one). Minnesota did very well on their second down plays- run or pass (6-18). But the big number was turnovers, (0-4).
