I think Ed Levine saw him as a sports DJ.   Brent saw himself as a journalist.  It’s not like Ed Levine hired Donna or Mike Waters.  I don’t think Axe was ever a beat writer.

Those are two different mindsets that over time are going to conflict.

I worked for WSYR when they had the SU rights. EVERYONE knew that the better the sports teams did, the more ads you sold and bowl games and NCAA tournament games were like gold.  That contract was a huge deal and we all benefitted.

And I was there when the probation investigation occurred and our GM came into the newsroom and told us all “do your job, do not worry about how it affects the contract”.

It can be a difficult line to toe some places.
