WML Project: Willie Mays

7/11/54 Willie Mays He’d hit his 31st home run that day and this was just before the All-Star game, suggesting he might make a run at Babe Ruth's record. He would hit only 10 more but win the MVP- then make his famous catch in the World Series.


Willie comes on at the 17 minute mark. He gets guessed by Arlene francis, an admiring Giants fan, not for the last time.

Willie was back on 7/15/62, this time as a San Francisco Giant. This is just after the All-Star game,w here Willie made another one of his great catches. They caught the Dodgers but not the the Yankees in the World Series.


He the first guest. Arlene got him again.

Willie was on the syndicated WML in an episode taped 10/25/68:


He comes on at 15:30, eating an ice cream bar. Arlene gets him again. Willie insists that “Baseball is show business.” Nipsey Russell says that “in Harlem, when we say “Batman” this is who we mean.” Willie discusses the chances that he and Hank Aaron could someday pass Babe Ruth.

Willie appeared again in an episode taped 12/14/72. Willie was by now a Met. He comes on at 13:40. Jack Cassidy gets him but Arlene was next in line, ready to pounce.
