I get that logic but it assumes a finite number of viewers that just get redistributed. People always have the option to just not watch anything and do something different with their time.

That's outdated logic honestly. People have near unlimited viewing choices these days: Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, cable on demand, YouTube, etc. The days of "least objectionable programming" are over. People just love football.
