I think this team has the players to full court press for a good 2-3 minutes a half, not because we're down, but as a weapon. This would be a nice change up to throw at teams, but it would require throwing Bras, Woody and Frank into the mix (along with JE). We only press when we are down, but it’s looked good when we've done it.

I agree. And note that JB put on the press with a lead yesterday. First time in I can’t remember how long. Unfortunately, it backfired and KR got his 3rd foul. JB never went back to it.

Frank is still recovering and can’t play. I don’t think Woody is 100% yet either.

Maybe in a few more games. Kadary would be a key player if we press, and he has had some issues with foul trouble just playing normal zone defense. That might be one of the reasons JB has been holding it back.

yeah I have thought the same...could be a lethal change up to throw unexpectedly...for 2, 3 or 4 minutes a half...

makes a lot of sense...and would be a way to use the whole team.

but buddy and joe would not be ideal for that. so not likely.

Might be.

I'm not saying that we should have done it yesterday because I don't think VT is really a team to press with their guards. Also, I'm not sure I would have said the same thing at the beginning of the season, but after watching the skillsets of the players on the team and as more of a long term option (once everybody available), I think it would be a good weapon to strategically put in our arsenal with the 2-3.

I can't remember the last season we really had players and depth to use the press other than when we're down, it will be interesting to see if Coach deploys it more.

See... I think JG and Buddy would be good pieces to the press. If you have MD, Bras or Woody guarding the inbound and big man back; AG, KD, JG and even Buddy could cause problems.

Pressing requires a lot of energy.
Unless we want to play more guys we won’t press unless it’s the press when we are down and want to speed up the opponent.

The 2012 team pressed during games we weren’t behind in. Because we had a lot of depth and JB said he wanted to shorten an opponent’s ability to play against our zone.
We don’t press unless we are behind now.

but they dont have the speed to pick off the wounded duck passes that are prime for turnovers from the press...foot speed really helps in the press

Why would you press a team that is more athletic than you and that you can dominate in a half court game with your size advantage? UVA, might press them some.

I agree... but buddy at 6'5 just needs to be in position, JG can just be active, let AG,QG, KD do the real work. I think there real value in the press would be as shooters after a steal.

I would be less concerned about how athletic they are, vice how good their guards are and whether or not they really have ball handlers on the team. By no way should this become something we try to for long stretches, but more so as change up that most teams would not prepare for against us. The press can also be used to kind of pick up the energy of our guys for short burst.

yeah the shooting is a plus for when the ball is recovered...but the gaurds are the ones that need to make the steals. There are other players that could be much more dangerous pressing at the gaurd spot. it is a tradeoff, for sure. But i think the press cannot afford 2 gaurds who are not plus defenders and still be a weapon. i think it would an overall plus to have 5 plus defenders out there from this current roster and they would end up scoring in transition if they got the steal enough to make it worth it.

Imagine marek and kadary as the guards and woody and braswell (or griffin and QG) and edwards or frank as the center in a 5 man press...so much length...would be a real problem!

or: Kadary, AG, Woody, Braswell, Frank - dangerous press

No chance.

Not that it’s a bad idea. It would be nice to dictate pace of play once in a while, other than we’re down 10+ in the late second half.

But we don’t do it.

Jordan Cornett or one of the other announcers has been beating this horse all season. I agree. We need to press more, especially if we want to beat a team like Virginia. Gotta speed them up and it’s worth the risk, because that’ll be a difficult game to win.

I think we need it when we settle into our 3 point chuck offense. I also think it is strictly to get tempo going as well coached teams will cut thru it and we don't have a rim protector on the back end.

I would like to press tonight. We play the fastest tempo in the conference and Virginia the slowest. We have seen this movie before on what pace usually wins out.

Can’t press with our starting lineup.

I would press with KR, JG, AG, RB, JE. Not ideal compared to our best pressing teams but need some sort of big at the rim. And given MD foul trouble, I would not have him in for it. I assume this situation would not be a forced press, ie down ten with 5 to go. In that situation, QG would clearly be on the floor.

This pressing scenario is something that could be put on for a few minutes in the first half.

I love the press and agree it is a good way to speed up games. With our personnel, the faster the pace, the better it is for us.

But Frank has to be our best big for the press and he is apparently out for a long time.

Kadary gets in foul trouble a lot just playing zone. Pressing is likely to speed that up.

Marek, Jesse and Kadary would all likely get in foul trouble.

If Woody, Frank and Bourama could play at 100%, I would be totally on board. Without all those guys, we do not have a lot of depth and I think the risk is not worth the reward. Unless we fall behind significantly.

We couldn’t press a pair of pants
Neither can my kids... Still trying to explain the purpose of an iron!! Can't get around their question, why?

Judging by your inane signature it seems that you too have gone mad. You’re in solid company on this site!

LOL!!

Those that will tell, don't know.. and Those that know won't tell!!

We'd have to play AG at the two for it to work. It could work situationally as Bras, AG are great in recovery...but it can't work because of spacing issues.

I’d like to press more, too. With Kadary in, either Buddy or Girard would do fine pressing. Girard is not nearly as slow as people suggest. He’s white, so I guess that makes him look slower, but he has plenty of speed to stay with a guy full court and/or set up a trap. You don’t rush for the yards he rushed for in high school (no matter the class) if you’re in the realm of slow. Height is the knock against him, but he’s not 5’10”. He’d be fine.

Buddy is slow, but has a wicked height advantage in a lot of cases. I know we tend to put a forward on the inbounder, but Buddy would do well there.

All the other guys are well suited to press.
