wow. great job by Mike Waters to throw a little jab at the NCAA

I'd say we should set up a Go Fund Me page or something to help him out, but that would certainly be a violation.

Now that the NCAA is painted into a corner with UNC Mike may spend the rest of his career taking shots at them. While I don't think UNC will get punishments that are equal to the crime I believe most alums will feel that they are way too harsh. It seems that post season ban this year isn't even completely off the table. Yikes.

Pretty sure Leo's got it covered.

Wait for him to graduate, then pay the kid. NCAA can't say about that.

Isn't Pitino also guilty, at a minimum, of the dreaded "lack of institutional control" that came down on JB? That sort of loosely defined infraction is a Pandora's box that the NCAA can use to punish at their discretion. I bet if Pitino gets anything it won't be as harsh as what JB got.

you could spin it that the school still can offer the scholies the kids but using them cant play. is Su putting the million dollars in savings to use some place else?

Maybe they're using it to pay the fine that the NCAA hit them with.

I read this article as a jab at Boeheim/Cuse/etc. for taking away this kid's scholarship rather than at the NCAA for taking away scholarships. Christian White has 100% right to be upset that he was the student-athlete stripped of his scholarship.

While the basketball team does not get to use the three scholarships, wouldn't the money that is not being spent on these three potential players (scholarships still cost the school) still get used in the general scholarship fund? Won't three other students get to use the money? I would imagine that this sanction essentially transfers the scholarship money from 3 athletes to three non-athletes who will now be able to attend Syracuse University.

I don't know. But I somehow doubt that the money would be used for other non-athlete students.

I agree, i read it as a slam on our program for doing that to White.

The point is that the lack of scholarships is punishing the player(s) rather than the university. So much of what is done by NCAA decisions hurts the players who in most cases have nothing to do with the sanctions given.
And no, I don't think White was putting any blame on Boeheim/Cuse for losing his 'ship.

To Mel03, Macky44 etc
Do you think the NCAA would allow SU to grant a scholarship to any basketball player , walk-on or otherwise and not count it towards the scholarship limit? Or are you saying that JB should have given Chris, say Tyler Lydon or another scholarship player, their scholarship to stay under the limit? I''m confused about this take from the article.

Yeah what they are saying doesn't make sense. If SU didn't take the scholarship from Christian White, who by the way showed up to SU knowing that he may not have a scholarship, then they would have had to take it away from another player. Their hand was forced by the NCAA. Can't see how that puts SU in a bad light, aside from obviously not having committed the original infractions to begin with (although I, like most others, feel like the penalties drummed up by the NCAA were ridiculous and overly punitive).

Mike, ironically, is a grad of UNC. I don't think he will spend much time trying to "tar" the Tarheels.

Agreed. Remember the roster was all set up to also include McCullough (debatable), Bryant and Diange this year which would have left White with no ship, because JB still would have gone after Chukwu because #CatRescuer.

Feel bad for White, but my daughter will have $70K in loans even after a half tuition academic scholly, at least he got 3 years of scholly for hoops. He genuinely does not sound resentful, just disappointed and I respect him for that honorable character.

Scholarships are (were) year to year. Walk ons especially.

This could have easily gone unreported. But this is actually who the sanctions affect.

You all know I am not the biggest fan of Mike Water's writing style. But I am glad they reported this story and I totally agree with you conclusion that the sanctions end up affecting non-participants.

However, generally I do not like Syracuse.com lately. They ran story on an FBI agent who was supposedly sexually abused by BF. And surprisingly his brother works for ESPN. In the the story they wrote it to create the most sensationalism and innuendo that there was an actual there-there. What bothers me from a more objective news reporting position is two questions. What did his brother do at ESPN what was his role in reporting the BF story. And in the story, the FBI agent's boss told him not to say anything about the BF sexual abuse. What is the name of the FBI supervisor and why would anyone stop a subordinate from speaking up about sexual abuse they had as a child. It seems to me there's a pretty big story there about the FBI agent's boss. Isn't this some kind of felony to prevent someone from coming forth like this? Why was the FBI agent's boss protecting BF? Where was the crack reporting digging into the truth of the accusations? One thing is to report scandalous hearsay but it seems to me the reporters have an obligation to get a little bit of the next level of detail and truth. At least we have the Louisville prostitute story to keep the rags occupied!
