Game was on ESPN Classic last night.

Down 58-56, Moten is fouled with 5.2 seconds. An eternity.

He misses the 1st, and camera pans to JB who's screaming at Moten to intentionally miss the second shot. He does.

Hoyas rebound. Harrington fouled with 3.9 seconds. Hits both. Game over. 60-56.

If you make the second FT, you are down one and can try to get a quick steal. Otherwise, foul. 3.9 seconds is a ton of time to go down the court and get a great look.

Just surprising to see such poor clock management.

bit of a stretch to say he 'blew the game'

that's like saying Belicheck blew the super bowl by telling the team to let the Giants score a touchdown.

either way you're in a bad spot and it's a long shot to get the win.

Yeah, good point. They weren't ahead, so it's not fair to say he blew it.

I think the thought process around clock management at the end of games has changed over the years. Whether to miss FTs, whether to foul when you're up by 3 and not let them take the 3, etc... It just seemed that you'd only miss the FT intentionally if there was 2-3 seconds left, or if you were already down by 3.

And I don't know that it's exactly "surprising" to see poor clock management. Kind of like poor free-throw shooting.

Biggest end of game blunder I remember was in the Dome vs Uconn a few yrs ago; we were down by 1 or 2 & he doesn't foul with like a 4-5 second shot/game clock difference. I just thought wow, What?

2/17/90 Syracuse has just scored to take a 63-65 lead on Notre Dame. There are 2-3 seconds left and we don't front the inbound guy so we can have 5 guys who have been told not to foul defend four guys. The inbound pass comes in to a guy 35 feet from the basket who turns, squares up and throws in the winner. If you front the inbounds guy he has to either throw a pop fly anybody can get or throw it sideways, in which case the clock starts with the ball 80 feet from the basket. That one has always killed me.

That would be the Elmer Bennett shot.

As far as end game management, I believe most people would argue that historically we start fouling TOO quickly in the game. Im mostly referring to around the 2 minute mark. If we are down 4 points with two minutes to play, and we dont have the ball..most times we are fouling. I dont really agree with that. I would even argue that down anything less than four possessions at two minutes, i would not foul.

I think ND might have made 2 passes before they took the shot. I am sure that Michael Edwards was in the game rather than Dave Johnson. That, to me, was the big problem, as the play went right over Edwards' head.

I definitely feel like end-game strategy has evolved pretty significantly in the past 10-15 years. Back then, it seemed like coaches didn't realize what you could do with as little as 2 seconds remaining. It was almost like the whole clock wasn't used. Seems like alot of the NBA strategies have now entered into the college game in terms of what coaches do with the last 10 seconds of close games.

I have a real problem with this. Moten missed a free throw?! The dude was money! I don't believe he missed it. It was goal tending. Had to be. ;)

There was one pass:

I still think we are better off fronting the guy.

LOL at digger, wow talk about unprofessional. No way JB should have shook his hand there.

BTW there were 2 passes. That was a brilliantly executed play.

I am wondering: don't you think clock management began to change after Christian Laettner hit that winning shot with 1.3 seconds left? Also, does anyone else remember that a few years later Conrad McRae (maybe?) beat Villanova at the exact same arena with the exact same shot with the same time left on the clock? Of course, that game did not have Final Four cache, but . . . WOW.

That game was total bullsh1t. No way they should have put another second on the clock. Digger and his drunken ass dance. I would have kicked him in the nuts if I was JB.

I remember watching the game with my fatherfrom section 103 where he ushered and it was the first time in my life (I was 19) that I heard my father say the word. I believe it was "you have got to be fuking kidding me".

Boeheim was not considered a great end game strategist.
Failing to guard the inbounder almost cost us the Pitt game in '03 as well.
And some of us who were at the final Manley game thought he was making a big mistake
by killing clock.
We were doing fine attacking G-town.
When we got passive they took advantage.

Tonight...they will pay yet again for that game.

GO ORANGE!

Digger is a huge DOUCHE !!!!

They should have disallowed the Notre Dame win on his behavior alone !!!

Yes, two passes, nice execution. JB always has someone in the face of the player inbounding the ball these days and has for a long time. I wonder if he had a change of heart directly as a result of this game?

Geez, a lot of negative posts here, focusing on JB not being a good end of game strategist. Maybe I'm wrong but I think JB is one of the better coaches in these scenarios. I'm not sure how I can prove it but I'm willing to bet he has a higher winning percentage in close games compared to other coaches, and I'm willing to guess it's not even close. Maybe a metric like OT games would be a good one, too? JB knows clock and strategy, regardless of a few incidents that didn't go his way.

Coaches learn as they go along and game strategy evolves in the sport as has been suggested. He's a better coach now that he was 20 years ago, (but he was pretty good then). Mike Hopkins is forutnate to learn the game next to him at this stage of his career.

There were two passes- the inbounds pass and Ellis's pss. When I said there was one pass in the post with the video I meant one after the inbound play. I was referring to Ellis' pass.

1. Mike Hopkins had a lot of hair.
2. that team should never have lost
3. JB's glasses were well...yikes!

Good posts about you and your father, Marsh. One of the best things about the team, program, etc, is the bond it creates with my kids, mainly my son.
