In my original response, I focused on the 'largely deadwood' part of the post and I basically disregarded the rest - 'kids who have been injured and haven’t had time to recover, or just to upgrade.'.
The list above includes at least one guy who was probably told to look elsewhere, some injured guys, and some guys looking for greener grass elsewhere because it probably wasn't going to happen here.

So, yes, I think you can argue that SU basically culled a chunk of the roster this year.

You can say that some of these guys went willingly for better offers somewhere else and they were not necessarily encouraged by the staff to look elsewhere but regardless, there was turnover that was facilitated by the availability of the transfer portal.

I think it's probably easier for powerhouse programs to deal with the transfer portal because, however many guys want out, they are twice as many who want in. 
For a middle of the pack team like Syracuse, a team that has been dealing with depth issues for what feels like 15 years, the transfer portal seems to be more of a headache than an advantage.

And if Freshman Tyler Magnuson is a guy who 'received the talk' and was encouraged to go somewhere else, then I'm worried about the staff's ability to identify talent.  I'm hoping that he just wanted to go closer to home.  If he's transferring because he's not a good fit, that's really bad.
