Of seniors on the
NJ.com Top 50 list,
Paramus Catholic wide receiver/defensive back
Najee Clayton is one of only a handful of players who remains uncommitted. However, things are starting to heat up for the talented class of 2015 athlete.
On Tuesday evening, the 6-3, 220-pounder added an offer from Illinois. The Fighting Illini joined Syracuse, Rutgers, Florida, Boston College, Virginia, UConn, Pitt and a few others in offering. Illinois offered Clayton as a safety.
Clayton is yet to set up official visits, but this weekend, the three-star prospect will make the four-hour trip from Paramus to the Carrier Dome to watch Syracuse (3-5) face North Carolina State (4-4).
“He’s taking an unofficial (to Syracuse),” Paramus Catholic head man Chris Partridge confirmed. “Just going to their game.”
In a recent
interview with reporter Shawn Brown, Clayton said he’s been feeling the love from the Orange staff.
"I have very big interest in Syracuse," Clayton told Brown. "Me and (assistant) coach (Bobby) Acosta, we have a perfect relationship. He's a great guy."
Clayton has received plenty of interest to play on both sides of the ball and if you ask NJ.com College Football Recruiting Analyst
Todderick Hunt, he’s got plenty of potential to contribute in college wherever he lines up.
“Clayton presents a nice combination of size and athleticism,”
Hunt said. “He's a physical receiver who you can trust to make tough grabs across the middle of the field and in the red zone. He displays good hands, body control, and gets body position to compete for the football.
“He is big and physical enough to out-muscle most defensive backs at the high school level. Clayton projects as a possession receiver or could continue to grow into a flex tight end/ h-back in college. He also has skills that translate to the defensive side of the ball.”
As time winds down between now and signing day in February, schools will continue to pursue the in-state talent. One thing’s for sure, whoever lands Clayton will be lucky to have him.
