Im going to go out on a limb and predict that this will be our best unit not just on O but on the entire team with our LB's coming in a close second. I realize that there is little to go on considering last year but when i look at the talent we have at this position i really think they are going to shine. For the first time in a very long time we have a true number one reciever in Ishm. He will demand attention which is going to make everyone else better. I have been a big fan of Cornelius and think that George screwed him up last year. With a fresh start i expect great things from him. In Custis and Adly we have size that we havnt seen on the hill for a very long time. Actually since Tony G hung up his cleats years ago. Avant was raved about last year in camp and is by all accounts a true talent. Ben is always steady and should continue to improve. So if Hunt can find the broad side of a barn and is given time by the OL i think that this unit is going to shine.

Don't forget esteem, swerve and broyld playing out of the slot...,a lot of good players playing "wr"

Totally share your sentiments. Hopefully this is the year for this fine young man to shine. Give em' hell, Alvin!

Quite the limb there
No doubt. I think it's a virtual lock our LBs are going to be our most exciting unit, picking anything over them is surprising, forget the WR group that was moderately meh at best, picking over them is a big shock.

but man if it comes to pass, it would be huge because we seriously need an offensive outburst from somewhere.

It would be huge but if they manage to be better than our LB group or even DT group then we should win 9+ games.

Seriously though, ish was a playmaker as a true frosh. Thats rare for wr, and there was nothing else around him. Cant wait to see the sophomore jump.

Hopefully the new schemes help as well. I know there will be more dropped balls in college than pro ball but we dropped a LOT of passes last year. I'll hand out some blame to the one thousand quarterbacks we fielded last year and the oddball play calling but there's enough blame left over to say there is room for improvement.

I'm going to go out on a further limb and say our offense as a whole surprises and we finish top 40 in O.

The potential is there for this unit to be one of the better ones on the team.

But that's all it is at this point - potential. And potential has the potential to get coaches fired, is the axiom I've always heard.

Ishmael - Was very good as a freshman. Have no reason to believe that with a better offense and better QB (theoretically) he won't be better.

Broyld - Was hurt most of last season, but people forget that he had the second-most catches for any sophomore in program history two years ago. That is quite an accomplishment. Will he ever live up to the hype this board has set for him? Probably not. But he can be a very good option at the position - and someone that can compliment Ishmael quite well.

Estime - Also was hurt most of the year last year - but he had the third-most catches by any freshman in SU history. Again, college football uses the forward pass much more than in prior years, but that is nothing to sneeze at. If healthy, he can be a game-changing type player. Think about how useful Maurice Jackson was to SU's offense during the late 90s. Estime could be that type of player if used correctly.

Cornelius - By the end of his freshman year, he had established himself as one of the top vertical threats on the team. 2 for 53 and a TD vs. Pitt. 7 for 81 vs. BC. Then he disappeared for the majority of last season. Shafer mentioned he was the most consistent performer in the group during spring ball - he should be a solid rotational player in the mold of Darryl Daniel. Which isn't a bad thing at all.

Those are the top four in my book at the position, but there are others that could absolutely see significant playing time. Custis and Enoicy are wild cards - they are big, strong and fast. We haven't had many players in that mold in SU history to be honest. Johnnie Morant comes to mind, but he was more of a vertical threat. These two are more physical types in the WR/TE hybrid mold. Then you have Ben Lewis, who has been able to provide solid moments when given playing time, and Sean Avant, who was the talk of camp last year before he got hurt (I think).

There are reasons to be optimistic for sure. And there is fabulous depth at the position (didn't even mention Erv Phillips, who I view more as a RB but will play slot WR and could be a game-changing type as well). But at this point I think it's just potential, until many of these guys prove to be consistent during the season.

Another note regarding Ash and Estime's Soph and Frosh years is that they were catching balls from a Sophomore QB who had never started before and whose arm isn't his strongest attribute. That QB is now 2 years older, more mature and more polished as are they.

What the hell,

Your 2 wild cards Custis, and Enoicy hold the key to how good this unit will become. If they step up, and get significant playing time, they will help in the running game, their size in blocking. They would also help in the red zone, they would be a matchup problem in the end zone. They both should be able to run through some tackles for extra yards. Also if they are playing well, people will have to play Ishmael in single coverage.
