The Orange goes to 3-2-2, while the Raiders improve to 4-1-1. Colgate netted the only goal of the game on its first shot in the third minute. Emily Crichlow's shot from 22 yards out hit the cross bar and landed beyond the goal line to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead. The Orange began to increase its offensive pressure which resulted in two scoring chances for freshman Alex Lamontagne (Whitby, Ontario). Her shot in the 17th minute went wide and her shot in the 39th minute was saved by Colgate goalkeeper Brenna Mason. Junior Erin Simon played the ball from the midfield down the right sideline into SU's offensive end to freshman Eva Gordon. Gordon crossed the ball to Lamontagne on the left side of the box, but Mason's stop on Lamontagne's shot preserved the Raiders' one-goal lead. The Orange was the more dangerous team to start the second half as it recorded the first 10 shots and earned four corner kicks but couldn't take advantage of its opportunities. The Raiders had a chance to add to their lead in the 87th minute. Syracuse turned the ball over in its defensive zone and Jenna Raepple lofted s shot toward the goal, but MacKenzie Moranz deflected the ball over the goal to keep the Orange within one. SU had the final possession of the match, but couldn't get off a shot. "It certainly was a game of two halves," said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. "We had a game plan but we didn't execute it in the first half. As a result we gave Colgate an open shot and it resulted in a goal. It was really the only chance they had in the first half. In the second half, I thought we executed our game plan. We came out and had opportunities. We outshot them, doubling their number of shots. We had more corners. Their goalkeeper was much busier in the second half. Again we didn't finish our opportunities. This is a heartbreaking loss because I thought we did really well in the second half. If we had executed our game plan from the start we would have been alright." Syracuse outshot Colgate, 15-7, and earned six corner kicks to three for the Raiders. Moranz and Mason each recorded four saves. Syracuse is back on the road on Sunday, Sept. 14 when it takes on Drexel in Philadelphia at 1 p.m.
