SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman Sheridan Street scored twice to lead the Syracuse women's soccer team to a 5-3 victory against Binghamton in an exhibition match at the SU Soccer Stadium. Street was one of nine players to record at least one point in the contest.
"I thought we were pretty dangerous going forward and it was exciting soccer," said Orange head coach Phil Wheddon. "I was really happy with our attacking production. Defensively, we fell asleep on three occasions. MacKenzie (Moranz) pulled off two world-class saves and we have to be first to those rebounds. The reason they got those shots in the first place was we fell asleep after scoring ourselves, so I'm disappointing defensively. On the attacking side of things I'm excited about what this group can do."
Freshman Alex Lamontagne started the scoring in the ninth minute on an assist from junior Jackie Firenze. Sophomore Maddie Iozzi then scored on an assist from junior Maya Pitts and Street netted her first goal off a pass from sophomore Emma Firenze to give Syracuse a 3-0 lead.
The Bearcats recorded back-to-back goals to cut the lead to one, but senior Alexis Koval scored on an assist from freshman Alana O'Neill to put the Orange up 4-2. Binghamton tallied the final goal of the half in the 43rd minute to cut the lead to 4-3 at intermission.
Street recorded the only goal of the second half in the 74th minute as O'Neill and Koval were credited with assists on the play.
Syracuse's defense limited the Bearcats to just eight shots and Moranz finished with four saves. The unit was the hardest hit by graduation as it must replace four defenders as well as its all-time winningest goalkeeper. It's the area that Wheddon feels needs to be sharper for next week's regular-season opener.
"We need to make sure that we're more compact," Wheddon said. "We gave them a lot of room to play. We have to make sure that we squeeze the field and are more compact as a unit next week. We'll be working on that in training. We also have to shore up our midfield defending and our individual defending. They are a young group for sure. Right now I would say they are working pretty well together."
The Orange officially opens the 2014 campaign next weekend at the Penn State Invitational. Syracuse takes on Missouri on Friday, Aug. 22 at 5 p.m. and faces the host Nittany Lions on Sunday, Aug. 24 at 2:30 p.m.
