We are halfway through Dino Babers' second year at Syracuse. I decided to multiply some key numbers by 2 to see what they might be at the end of the season. (I realize the toughest part of the schedule is still ahead so these number will probably dip a bit but this is what he have to work with now.) Then I'll compare it to Dino's second year at Eastern Illinois and at Bowling Green, (that, too is against lesser competition : I don't expect these numbers in the ACC Atlantic. But it does give us a view of the sort of offense Dino it trying to build toward.) 2017 Syracuse projected to 12 games Eric Dungey passing: 336 of 522 (.644) for 3,604 yards (10.7 per completion, 6.9 per attempt) 18TDs 8 int running: 160c 864 yards (5.4) 16TDs Total offense: 4,468 yards, 34TDs Dontae Strickland 152c 468 yards (3.1) 6TDs 18r 124 yards (6.9) 2 TDs Total: 592 yards 8 TDs Moe Neal 50c 254 yards (5.1) 0TDs 16R 284 yards (17.8) 2TDs Total: 538 yards 2TDs Steve Ismael 112r 1,458 yards (13.0) 6TDs Erv Phillips 104r 950 yards (9.1) 4TDs Devin Butler 32r 314 yards (9.8) 4TDs Ravian Pierce 38r 276 yards (7.3) 4TDs 2015 Bowling Green (14 games) Matt Johnson passing: 383 of 569 ((.673) for 4,946 yards (12.9 per completion, 8.7 per attempt) 46TDs 8int running: 113c 159 yards (1.4) 4 TDs Total: 5,105 yards 50TDs Travis Greene 222c 1,296 yards (5.8) 15TDs 27r 237 yards (8.8) 2TDs Total: 1,535 yards 17TDs Fred Coppet 146C 826 yards (5.7) 5TDs 8r 75 yards ((9.4) 0TDs Total: 901 yards 5TDs Gehrig Dieter 94r 1,033 yards (11.0) 10TDs Roger Lewis 85r 1,544 yards (18.2) 16TDs Ronnie Moore 72R 951 yards ((13.2) 6TDs Ryan Burbrink 56r 627 yards ((11.2) 4TDs 2013 Eastern Illinois (14 games) Jimmy Garoppolo passing: 375 of 568 (66.0%) 5,050 yards (13.5 per completion, 8.9 per attempt) 53TDs 9int running: 70c 62 yards (0.9) 4TDs Total: 5,112 yards 57TDs Sheppard Little 217c 1,551 yards (7.2) 15TDs 21r 182 yards (8.7) 2TDs Total: 1,733 yards 17TDs Taylor Duncan 217C 1,003 yards (4.60 10TDs 31r 243 yards (7.8) 0TDs Total: 1,246 yards 10TDs Eric Lora 123r 1,544 (12.6) 9TDs Adam Drake 85r 1,305 (15.4) 3TDs Jeff LePak 51r 723 yards (14.3) 8TDs Keiondre Gober 48r 894 yards (18.6) 9TDs Comments: We are throwing as much as those teams did- actually a little more, (44 times a game vs. 41 for each). We aren't throwing the ball downfield as much (10.7 per completion to 12.9 and 13.7)). The result is far fewer TD passes. It think the twin reasons for that are that we cannot run the ball with our running backs, (722 yards vs. 2,122 and 2,554) and the fact that we have been throwing the ball to only two guys, (top two receivers 216 catches, next two, 70 vs. 179/128 and 208/99), I think the latter problem started to get resolved in the Pitt game as we got Butler and Pierce, (who will likely be the top two guys next year), involved. Babers has consistently said that the running game will get going as the young offensive line grows up, (and the two four star OTs he's recruited show up next year). If we could get to 50% of those Eastern Illinois numbers while playing in this league, we will be doing pretty well, (QB throws 27 TDs while the top two runners gain 1,277 yards.)
