I'm old. I played for the original Simmons, probably before most of you were born. Different time, different game, no comparison

Except: Simmons preached the following:

Value every possession.

Put the ball on the other players stick.

Communicate

What I saw yesterday was deplorable. Balls carelessly thrown away. Offsides. Two or three on one and losing a ground ball. Losing to a trailing stick because no-one yelled it was coming.

As for the game itself. I like AF's offense. They pass, cut and attack. I whish we employed it. I'm surprised their record is what it is. Our own is going to be a major disappointment if the team doesn't get it together.

And one last observation. In every time out in every game I've watched this year, the opposing head coach is encouraging, correcting and planning.

Where is Gary?

Where is Gary?
I think all saw Coach Odierna giving the defense a passionate butt-chewing after the first quarter. I think it paid dividends. I wish we could keep him.

Yes, but, I believe his name is on their equipment. Why isn't he in their heads and on that occasion also on their backs?

Did he announce he's leaving after the season or something?

I'll repeat what I've said before: What does Gary do?
I believe he coaches the team. He is not the guy who addresses the team in huddles during timeouts mid-game, but that is a little more common for head coaches than many seem to think. It is often the coordinators who lead in those huddles with the offense and defense. In fact it is not too different from Desko before him, and his own coach Simmons Jr. before him. I am not happy with a lot of things from our start to the year, but it is still annoying that people assume he does nothing just because he is not screaming during time outs. He is often talking to specific players individually, as well as the coordinators.

We had a rough start to the game but we did improve in the second half. Gaits coaching style on the sidelines is really not a concern for me.

Jut so there's no mistake, I have nothing but gratitude and admiration for Coach Gates. There's no denying that Jim Brown was the greatest of my era, but Coach Gates stands alone today. My only point is and was, I wish he was more visibly involved.
