In general in any given season in college football you can expect your team to lose a game to a bad team and win a game over a good team. Surprisingly that hadn't happened under Shafer in either direction until yesterday. USF is currently 87th in the Sagarin. It is still early though so they could move up or down as the year goes on.
Before USF his worst loss was to a 65th ranked team, which is pretty impressive. However so far his best win is over a 58th ranked team, which leaves a lot to be desired. Hopefully the loss to USF will be evened out with a win over Louisville.
SU has been pretty lucky in regards to losing to bad teams. Post GRob we have only lost to three teams worse than 70th:
2009 at 87th Louisville
2011 at 76th UConn.
