Is Notre Dame truly any bigger than Duke in basketball, or Clemson in football?  Notre Dame hasn't been "all that" for a long time.  They have a huge following, but so do many other schools.  Notre Dame's special charisma is mostly in the minds of their fans and alumni.

Their contract with NBC only pays them $15M a year, and expires in 2025.  That doesn't compare well with typical conference payouts.

ND's 5 football games on NBC last year averaged 4.8M viewers, which is (frankly) terrific.  The ACC doesn't hit that number except for it's conference championship games.  It looks like the average football game runs between 1.5M and 2.5M in viewership.

But the NCAA playoffs, in contrast, draw around 18M viewers per game.  So, while ND outperforms the typical Saturday afternoon game, it's not like they're a "Bowl Game" every week.
