Ashton Broyld on final day of Fall camp

I always love watching journalists in the background in these things. Gotta love a job where a dumpy middle aged guy can actually wear a freaking Seattle Mariners jersey to work.

From that interview, I get the feeling that AB might get more carries than many here have speculated. Thoughts?

I hope it isn't carries as much as just "touches". Got a feeling he may be one of those guys well-suited for the bubble screen, which we all have grown to love.

Hopefully it will remind us of Antwon Bailey's role in the 2009 Rutgers game. Lined up everywhere, all kinds of plays designed for him. And it worked pretty well.

Maybe HCDM isn't tipping his hand untill the first game. Closed spring practice, and not a lot of touches during the scrimages for Ashton, sounds like he is trying not to give the other coaches something to plan for.

The whole NW defensive staff should be canned if they get duped into this. The cat's outta the bag with AB.

From what I've been told, I would bet that AB will be a featured part of this offense.

That's great to hear. And it might not be as much about touches [although, hopefully he gets a sufficient number of those] as it is plays on the field, so that (1) defenses can't key on him when he enters the game and (2) they need to account for him, which opens things up for other players even when he doesn't get a touch.

He's more well spoken than I would've thought.
Not exactly sure what you mean by that comment, but the kid is a leader. You can't be dumb and lead your team to the NYS High School Championship.

Most kids who whip out their ccknblz in public out of anger are not too bright. Most of them.

Kinda like how UW changed their offense for Locker. Well-known on the message boards, not so much in the coaches box.

Not to piss on the parade here, but supposing you're the NW D coordinator, how much are you really worried about Broyld at this point? He's a decent recruit seeing his first game action. He's a completely unknown quantity.

Would you try to plan on the idea that a lot of the offense runs through Broyld, or would you game plan more on Nassib/Lemon/Sales/Stevens/running back of your choice? I think I'd plan on the guys I've got tape on and take my chances that Broyld's just another guy.

If that is the perspective the D coordinator takes, here's hoping what's planned for Broyld, whatever and how much that is, is enough to make an under prepared defense pay in game one.

Honestly, I am not sure the NW d-coordinator is worried about any of our guys in particular -- maybe Lemon if he is healthy. We have a lot of balance, but no one guy who is going to scare a defense.
Should be expecting us to use less of a blocking FB and more sets with two backs, with Broyld (along with Gulley) being an option for that second back. NW sees an innovative offense in practice every day -- not likely we will catch them napping, so it will come down to basic football.

They will prepare for our offense we run using whatever they have at their disposal vs preparing for a player. We don't have a Reggie Bush or a Denard Robinson.

They will look at tape from last year Jam our recievers at the line and play 8 in the box pretty simple to defend against us. Given that Hack is still running the show i doubt they expect too many new wrinkles. If we want to win this game we cant throw away the first two or three series running off tackle. In my opinion i would love to see us come out with a fast tempo shot gun and try to get Flash in space or catch Stevens down the seam.

That would be a solid gameplan...honestly i think we use the TE's all game long. Open up the field completely.

If the NW coaches are smart and have been doing any studying of past history, they will arrive at the conclusion that if AB is a serious offensive weapon he will only see the field maybe 5 - 6 times the entire game to prevent any type of injury and because he doesn't know the entire playbook yet.

Pass to open up the run perhaps. If we run a 4 WR set they won't be able to sit 8 in the box. Would be nice to use some misdirection right out of the gate to get them guessing as well.

The NW d line is on the smallish side so we are going to try and run over them at some point. Aside from MLB they are actually much smaller than our defense across the board.
