Hard to notice vs the stooges we had been playing, but dude looks rather unathletic out there vs stiffer competition. It looked like the speed of the game was too much for him, sort of weird seeing as that he's played big time competition for years. Perhaps this was just due to the "shock" of finally playing players equally athletic and it takes a game or two to catch up to speed.

I think we saw tonight why White didn't stay in the draft. You can't be 6'8", shoot as well as he does, and not be a projected 1st rounder without some obvious weakness.

Unathletic is the wrong word. I thought defensively he looked fine, he had a few plays on that end that I was impressed by. I think today showed what we heard all summer about him - he can't create his own shot and isn't that great off the dribble. It's a lack of ball handling more than anything. This team is better suited running the O through Howard and Lydon with AW3 being a catch-and-shoot perimeter player.

he is a fine basketball player but I am always surprised (and this doesn't just apply to our board) when people think 5th transfers are suddenly pro prospects. if they were pros, they would be pros by now and they wouldn't be here. it doesn't mean that they can't be fine players, but they aint AA's. they are good college players and that's it.

AW3 needs to accept his lot in basketball terms; move him to the 3, start Battle now. Enough of Robey, let him enter at the first tv break and show high energy, or he sits the rest of the game.

To roberson's defense, every time one of our guards drove to the hoop to create open space for him, they were out of control and immediately turned the ball over.

I've had it with lay up challenged players, enough already... On that note; shelve Chukwu for next year, the guy has less than zero instincts for the game of basketball...

I did see Roberson miss two straight layups and it made me want to put my head through a wall.

Serious question: What is it that a guy like JJ Redick can do that AWIII can't? Speaking 'athletically/shot creation/etc.' To me, it seems like our offensive scheme just didn't put AWIII in the best situations to succeed—not often enough. I remember specifically, a couple of plays where he was 'open,' but the guard began dribbling toward him before passing him the ball, and AWIII's defender just went to close the space because it was just so obvious what was about to happen. If he's a catch-and-shoot guy, he needs to be put in those types of situations, and our guard play just wasn't up to dealing with the pressure. Not every drive has to go to the backboard. Not every drive has to be for the purpose of getting the ball into the paint or passing into the paint. And our guards just need better, lower, closer dribbling. Don't know how many times i actually gasped as the ball was wayyyy out in front of a guard, ripe for the plucking.

Glad we got this game out of the way at this stage, actually. Shows these kids what they need to work on, and a practical lesson is the best lesson. I'm glad they did compete the whole way through. The hill was just too much to climb. But, they've learned. And hopefully, Frankie will learn to keep plugging and not get his head down so quickly. We have weapons offensively. The zone will improve as they go along, and especially once Chukwu learns to try to protect a smaller area.

You've given up hope that Chukwu can be a contributor after just five games? Good thing you're not coaching this team.

It would be foolish too, he sat out all of last year, bigs take longer to develop.

He totally looks like a guy that picked up a basketball later in life; I wish we could inject Etan Thomas' blocking instincts... He is our 4th best center, play him 5-7 minutes per game...

For this year? Yes.

Chin still hasn't developed either. Just because they're big doesn't mean it just takes longer to develop, they may never develop into anything.

Agreed about looking slow and unathletic compared to SC but I think a big part of that was him not being comfortable yet. He definitely doesn't have high level quickness but you could tell he was thinking way too much out there and not always sure where to be in relation to his teammates. As the season moves on and he gets used to our systems/players the game will speed down for him immensely. Showing up on first day of class and missing all of the off season workouts/team conditioning is a factor and it's going to take a little time.

For this year? Yes.
He's very raw at this point, and doesn't look like he'll contribute much offensively any time soon, but that's crazy talk given what he can give this team defensively once he gains a little experience and is coached up.

From what I've seen, not only this past game, he's may not even contribute on the defensive end this year. I'll take a 6'8" guy that can move around and be aware of his surroundings over PC if I had to make a choice right now. PC reminds me of one of those guys that'll end up being solid on defense (I said solid, not great) while never developing any sort of offensive game.

Outside of Chinoso, I don't think we've had a player look that lost in over a decade.

Agree 100%.

You may be proven right, but to give up on him now would leave this team with 15-20 minutes of Coleman at center, with the rest of the minutes in the middle going to Lydon and Thompson, two guys essentially playing out of position. This team needs to get something from Chukwu if the high hopes many of us have are to be realized.

Definitely the wrong word. I thought he more than held his own athletically, and exceeded what I expected in toughness and defensive tenacity. Not worried about AW even a little bit. Our point guard play and lack of a post game -- different story.

pull up any youtube video of jj redick at duke and you will see a player that is clearly head and shoulders better than aw3. whether the root cause is skill, athleticism, acumen...it doesn't matter. some combination makes him a lot better and the other guy worse.

I haven't given up on him for this year - I hope he can give us a serviceable 15 minutes a game as he improves.

But I have given up on him as the next Rudy Gobert (as per one of those great preseason comparisons we had here)

Yeah anyone that had a bad game, let's just shelve them for the year. We'll come back next season and start playing again...until the next bad game and overreaction freak out.
