YR 1 (4-6-1) YR 2 (2-9-0) YR 3 (6-5-0) YR 4 (6-5-0) YR 5 (7-5-0) YR 6 (5-6-0) obviously this coach needs to be let go, got worse in year 6 hasn't improved. Fortunately for SU fans we stayed the course. That record was Coach Mac, and we all remember that YR 7 11-0-1, and we slew the Giant Penn St 48-20.

2-9, 6-5, 3-8, 6-5, 3-8, 7-5, 5-6

Is that not pretty much the same HCing performance as what you have above? If that guy was allowed more time with the new improved facilitates then that 11-0-1 likely NEVER happens. Each situation is different. A HC should be evaluated based on his current situation and how he has performed given his circumstances. To assume you will get the same results as a prior HC who is totally different and had to deal with different variables is silly. Blind faith is no way to run a program. The HC should have standards and expectations that he needs to meet. Everything else is irrelevant.

I thought HCFM's Orangemen were about to have a breakout year in 1981. But we'll never know. :noidea:

No question that W/L records and on-the-field improvements are the primary way to judge a HC.

A tad more difficult is judging whether the program is increasingly building its lifeblood (improved success in the recruiting battles), improving the tone (positive feelings among players & parents), and selling that success to key stakeholders (alums, former players, fans).

At the same time that Mac was winning in years 3, 4 and 5 (not leading the pack, but winning more than losing against D-1 teams), he was landing the recruits who led the leap in 1987. That is something the AD ought to be able to assess.

Marrone is doing the same. More competitive on the field, and at the same time, we are starting to land a few playmakers. Not there yet, but the direction feels right.
