Won't be a famous retread like Butch Davis, Mike Sherman or a DNA sample of Vince Lombardi. That's not really what the program needs, which is a foundational and sustainable approach.

Look at the realistic situation of Syracuse University. Bottom end of the payment model (thus far) and an Athletic Director coming from Boise State whose background and success was built on finding up-and-comers.

And if someone has committed any moderate-to-major NCAA violations, scratch them off the list ASAP. That won't fly with the Chancellor, let alone Coyle.

Situation is bad. The board is not even angry like it usually is after a non-LSU loss. We've collectively moved on. Man this sucks, moreso with three games left and our prized QB suffering a completely avoidable injury. Ugh.

The only coach we've ever had who was previously a head coach at what would not be called a "Power Five" school was Ossie Solem, who came here from Iowa in 1937: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ossie_Solem#Coaching_career_at_Iowa

The head coaches before him were getting their first opportunity here and most were alums. Solem was replaced by his assistant, Biggie Munn who pulled a Doug Marrone and left with his entire staff for a better opportunity at Michigan State. Munn was followed by Reeves Baysinger, another old alum whose disastrous tenure was followed by Ben Schwartwalder, who we got from Muhlenberg. A quarter century alter, Ben was replaced by Fank Maloney, Michigan's linebacker coach. he was followed by Dick McPherson, who was coaching the Brown's defensive back and had been the head man at UMASS a decade before. His replacement was Paul Pasqualoni, our linebacker coach, who had briefly been the head man at Western Connecticut State. the three guys since have been career assistants.

The next Syracuse coach will have a similar resume to the above, as well as his own set of strengths and weakness.

I don't think this is the way Coyle wanted things to go. I think he was planning on giving Shafer some more time.

I just don't see how he can now. This thing is shot.

Who would be an example of a coach that would fit your criteria?

A guy that none of us can recite or come up with if given five guesses.
