April 2, 2016 Spring Game Thread

Impressed with Colin Byrne on the second team OL thus far. Has gotten to the second level multiple times

Fade to Custis from Mahoney, TOUCHDOWN Syracuse. That was too easy for Custis

(Fade to custis? would would have ever thought to try that?)

Time for Hofrichter to do some kicking. Hits the PAT, drills a 20-yard FG, nails a 32-yarder and connects from 37 & 42. 4-4 for Sterling

@syrfootball
Custis works Dowels 1-on-1 and hauls in a TD pass. Big size advantage there.

Injured LBs Zaire Franklin and Marqez Hodge are on the field. Playing some touch football now. Dungey at QB, Fredericks at RB

Limited TE Josh Parris and WR Jacob Hill are also on the field.

@syrfootball
After two live contact sessions, we're in THUD tackle. Franklin and Bennett and other limited guys getting reps now.

@ChrisLibonati
Hernz Laguerre gets a sack on SU's third offensive possession. Looks like the defense has settled in a bit here.

@syrfootball
Dungey airs it out downfield to Cornelius but Winfield breaks it up. Maybe could have intercepted it. Ball a little underthrown.

syracuse
“Kenneth Duff” just made a tackle. Ugh

@ChrisLibonati
Jordan Fredericks sliced up the middle. Been a soft spot overall for SU's defense

The first-team offense is back on the field with Jordan Fredericks in at RB. He's stuffed by Steven Clark on first
down.

(Clark doing well seems counter to Libonati saying the middle has been a soft spot for the D. Maybe the backups struggled.)

Erv Philips jukes Kielan Whitner to break a long gain over the middle. Someone called for a late hit to the head. Heard "59" but there's 59.

Syracuse DL almost gets there, but Dungey hits Estime on a post and fits the ball between two defenders for a TOUCHDOWN

@syrfootball
Dan Conley is walking down the aisle with a huge tray of nachos.

A Dungey throw to Estime splits Jonathan Thomas and Rodney Williams. Estime gets his second touchdown

Strickland running like a tank. Broke a a few tackles

@syrfootball
I would say this is the largest spring game crowd in 4 years of being at this event.

@Stephen_Bailey1
Really impressive run by RB Dontae Strickland breaking four or five tackles up the middle. Dungey then overthrows Philips and Cordy picks it

Bad throw by Dungey there, but very impressive over-the-shoulder snag by Cordy.

@ChrisLibonati
Dungey gets picked off after overthrowing Ervin Phillips. Looked like Phillips would get over the top of Cordy, but Cordy boxed him out well

@ChrisLibonati
Jordan Fredericks has had a few nice runs, but has also been stopped at the line the most of RBs who've gotten playing time

@Stephen_Bailey1
Chris Slayton just absolutely demolished Jordan Fredericks in the backfield. The hit of the day so far, for sure.

Jamir Ferguson @NHB_JAMIR
@Stephen_Bailey1 how fast is the offense going?
Very fast. I can barely keep up with tweets/notes. 2nd/3rd team a bit slower due to lack of o-line depth.

@Stephen_Bailey1
Nice tackle by sophomore LB Shyheim Cullen on a tunnel screen to Custis. Backup OL really struggling here.

@Stephen_Bailey1
Nice catch by Alvin Cornelius working on Cordell Hudson. In route to pick up the first down.

@syrfootball
Advantage: Syracuse DL on this series. 1st-team DL absolutely blowing up reserve OL.

Dungey throws deep to Cornelius, ball was beautifully placed. Cornelius hangs on with Hudson in coverage. TOUCHDOWN Syracuse

@syrfootball
Dungey with his 3rd TD pass of the day. This one a bomb to Alvin Cornelius that covered 34 yards.

@Stephen_Bailey1
Dungey hits Cornelius down the seem for a 34-yard score. Really strong drive from Cornelius. Two impressive catches.

@arigilberg
I could be wrong, but I don't think WR Steve Ishmael has a single catch so far.

@syrfootball
Halftime will be 5 minutes.

@Stephen_Bailey1
Dungey hits Strickland in the right flat. Would've been gone for a TD if they weren't playing touch (limited guys in again).

Five-minute break for halftime. That'll feel like an eternity given the breakneck pace thus far.

Sometime around game three it's going to collectively sink in that we modernized the offense. It will be bittersweet. We'll be thrilled at what we're seeing and what's to come. And then we'll be confused and angry wondering why it took so long and why we were so persistent trying everything but this.
