Boeheim #12 is ESPN Top 50 Coaches Countdown

I liked this in the comments ...

"This is a slap in the face... you're saying Shaka Smart is in the same company as Boeheim??? Go espn you're drunk!"

He'd probably be top 5 if we made it to the elite 8 this year. 1 or 2 more wins would make a huge difference. Following that formula, Coach K should be well outside the top 5 as well.

They never define what "current" performance means. Is it just last season? (rankings indicate last season is being given the greatest weight). Last 2 seasons? Last 3? Probably kept vague purposely. Which makes the rankings mostly meaningless. It's just giving these guys something to write about every day...during a dead period.

I cannot WAIT for this thread to blow up with people taking extreme offense to this story that has no bearing on anything.

I assume the 11 ranked ahead of JB will be:
  1. PayPal Cal
  2. Rick Pitino
  3. Coach K
  4. Kevin Ollie
  5. Bill Self
  6. Billy Donovan
  7. John Beilein
  8. Tom Izzo
  9. Bo Ryan
  10. Greg Marshall
  11. Sean Miller
Since the rankings are based on current performance, I have no problem with the top 8. Not sure how you can put Bo Ryan ahead of JB and Marshall and Miller have no business ahead of our guy. And did John Goodman really write an insider article on who'll replace JB? I know Hop could leave, but c'mon. That's premium content?

These things are subjective; nothing to get too worked up about. Probably not worth the time it takes to click the link and read.

Nevertheless, if a major criterion is current performance, let's be honest: this was not one of Boeheim's stronger seasons. Any way you slice it, the inability to turn around a slide with that group of players doesn't reflect very well on the coach.

Definitely nothing to get worked up over, but it generates a fun debate during a dead period. In his writeup, Brennan refers to the past 6 seasons so I assume that's their definition of current performance. We've been very strong in that period.

Meh, nothing new here. Like others said, it's not anything to get worked up about. We'll always think Boeheim should be ranked higher because he coaches our team. Other fans will obviously think their coaches should be ranked higher, too.

I mean, UConn fans probably think Calhoun was decent at coaching basketball.

I think this upcoming season is a tailor made for a JB over-achieve.

I bet by the time the shooting is over, he'll be within a few of wins from this year. He'll get 25 wins. Somehow.

My guess is that the folks who had votes in this selection of top coaches have a sum of zero wins as coaches themselves.

I love this logic...tell that to the OT board crew because im pretty sure none of them have ever been president.

Nope, 1-11 is Igor.

I thought he'd be 7 or 8 but in the grand scheme with 300 plus head coaches I don't think a 4 spot difference is that big a deal.

Wouldn't put Boeheim in the top 15

I assume he'd be higher if the offense hadn't been awful for the past couple seasons. Some of the guys ahead of him may have accomplished less, but as X's and O's coaches I have no issue with any of the remaining 11 above Boeheim.

Yeah I agree. Some of the worst offense college bball has seen with very good recruits as well. I don't really have a problem with him being there but thought 7-8 like most did. This season will be interesting to see. Some bench guard development will be paramount and I really hope some strategic tweaks could be implemented. Even to see Joseph pressure the ball a little before falling back into the zone. The letting other teams roll the ball into the frontcourt and beyond unimpeded has got to go, imo.

I don't think Calipari deserves to be in top 10. Only thing he is really good at is recruiting the best players money can buy.

So, only Carter, Clinton and Bush can evaluate Obama? Why have a democracy? Why let anyone other than Carter, Clinton and Bush vote on Obama's run for reelection?

Apparently lack of head coaching experience disqualifies you from evaluating coaching ability. I'm just carrying that sentiment to its logical conclusion.

I don't think I could really care any less about espn and their rankings, but JB at #12 is bordering on criminal.

Those of you extolling paypal, does that include the ridiculou$ly talented team the year before last that he coached all the way to a first round NIT loss to Robert Morris?

I love how the Yukon board has a post with twice as many replies about the Boeheim ranking. can you think of any program, franchise, etc, with similar success that is more insecure than they are? I think that's why they hate Syracuse. whether it be football or basketball, our fans have a blast and are pretty secure with our pecking order in sports. for them, no matter what they seem to win or what they build, or how much money they spend, they feel disrespected. and they are the only ones that are worried about it.
