LM Bracketology: North Carolina, USC Punch Tickets

Based on performances thus far, using the five-point system, the top eight seeds could be as follows:

1. Maryland
2. Florida
3. North Carolina
4. Syracuse
5. USC
6. Notre Dame
7. Stony Brook
8. Penn

Seeding Lowdown: After an extensive breakdown and team-by-team comparison using the five-point system, it still remains obvious that Maryland should be No. 1 with an undefeated record and No. 1 RPI. Florida takes the second seed over North Carolina with the head-to-head win, and with a seemingly close tie, the Gators have one less significant loss. The Tar Heels edge out Syracuse with two head-to-head wins and a better RPI, but also beat out USC with a greater number of significant wins. When looking at Syracuse and USC, the Trojans may be undefeated, but the Orange have a higher RPI, better results against common opponents and more significant wins.

CHAPEL HILL—The University of North Carolina’s Jenny Levy is the 2016 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Lacrosse Coach of the Year, the conference announced on Thursday. Levy wins the award for a fourth time, having earned the honor in 1997, 2002 and 2010 as well.

Levy led the Tar Heels to the ACC Tournament championship last weekend, capturing the second ACC title in program history with a 15-14 overtime win over Syracuse. The Tar Heels are 16-2 this season and have won 13 consecutive games, last losing on February 27 to top-ranked Maryland.

Carolina has won six consecutive one-goal games since dropping back-to-back, one-goal decisions in February to Florida and Maryland. UNC has been ranked No. 3 in the nation in both major national polls for most of the season.

The ACC also announced its other individual awards on Thursday. Syracuse’s Kayla Treanor was the Offensive Player of the Year, Notre Dame’s Barbara Sullivan was the Defensive Player of the Year and Syracuse’s Nicole Levy was the Freshman of the Year.

The Tar Heels are automatic qualifiers for the 2016 NCAA Tournament as the ACC champion and will learn their seeding on Sunday night when the NCAA releases its tournament bracket.
