Penn State started using it in 1947-48 because SMU wanted Penn St to leave the lone African American player at home, Wally Triplett, guard Steve Suhey stated "We are Penn State" and it became Penn States rallying cry. Triplett did go on to score the tying touchdown in the 13-13 tie with SMU.
