Welcome to Sun Screen Protection Day!

Sun Screen Day educates and brings awareness to the importance of using sunscreen to protect yourself and your children from harmful UV rays from the sun. This day is held on May 27th, just in advance of the summer and vacation season.

Ultraviolet rays from the sun is a serious risk to your health. With the steady depletion of the ozone layer above the earth, more and stronger UV rays get through.

Overexposure to the sun can cause a number of health problems. It can cause skin cancer, and sunspots. It can also result in premature aging of your skin.

Canadian PF Simi Shittu is One of SU's Top Targets in the Class of 2018

SU Basketball Will be Represented at CIABounce's Exposure Camp (TNIAAM; Carey)

The Canadian AAU travel team will hold an NCAA certified event, and Syracuse will be there recruiting.

The Syracuse Orange will be attending CIABounce's "The Classic Exposure Camp." The camp serves as an event for players to showcase their skills in front of college coaches. The best part about it is that it is an NCAA-approved event for college coaches to attend. Other schools that will be attending include Oregon, Washington State, and something called "Georgetown."

CIABounce is an AAU team in Canada that has produced the likes of Tyler Ennis, Andrew Wiggins, Anthony Bennett, and Jamal Murray, among others. According to this roster, Simi Shittu and Howard Washington are both currently on CIABounce and hold offers from Syracuse.

Shittu is a power forward in the class of 2018 who attends Monteverde Academy in Florida, but is a Canadian citizen. Shittu averaged 17.3 points per game to go along with 6.5 rebounds per game in CIABounce's tournament in late April.
Washington is a point guard in the class of 2017 from Niagara Falls, N.Y. He attends Athlete Institute Basketball Academy in Canada. Washington was originally committed to Butler, but recently decommitted. Quade Green appears to be the Orange's top point guard target in the class of 2017, if Green chooses elsewhere the Orange may begin to recruit Washington more heavily.

SU Athletics Generated Nearly $20 M Surplus in 2014-15, Per IRS Filings (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

Since they're a private school, Syracuse University gets to be exempt from a bunch of things... a fact especially frustrating for someone pretending to be a journalist most days of the week. Recently, this wannabe-journalist (aka blogger) tried to skirt around those things by filing a FOIA request with a public school. Alas, nothing came of it.

Even private universities end up with public documents eventually, though, even if it's a year or so later. Syracuse.com, as they do each year, gave us the info we need to know about Syracuse University salaries from 2014-15.

To no one's surprise, Jim Boeheim made the most of any SU employee according to its 990 form (for non-profit institutions), taking home $2Mish. Former Orange football coach Scott Shafer made $1.5M, while former athletic director (and still employee) DOCTOR Gross took home $894,361. So for those keeping track at home, two of the top three most-paid employees at SU no longer serve in that role. The other, Boeheim, is expected to be done with his role within two years from now.

As the headline states, however, the bigger takeaway is that SU Athletics generated a $19.8M surplus in 2014-15. Much of that is thanks to a fat ACC television contract, along with Syracuse football raking in dough despite being terrible during the year in question.

Crews Called to Kirkville Brush Fire in Same Area as Fire That Burned 100 Acres (PS; Sturtz)

Firefighters responded to a brush fire Thursday in the same area in eastern Onondaga County where a massive brush fire consumed 100 acres last week.

Kirkville firefighters responded around 8:45 p.m. to the area behind 6305 Ed Schepps Road, a dead-end road in the town of Manlius. A citizen had called 911 to report heavy smoke and possibly fire, said Sgt. Tina Marie Stanton, of the Manlius Police Department.

Last Friday more than 100 volunteer firefighters from about 40 departments throughout Central New York spent five hours battling the brush fire that spread over 100 acres in Kirkville. A tractor apparently sparked the fire.

Extremely dry weather helped stoke that fire. But conditions were expected to change this week, lowering the risk of brush fires in the area.

On Thursday night the brush fire appeared to be far less expansive. Fire officials did call for support from several fire departments, mostly in the form of ATVs to transport firefighters in off the main road to the fire. Six departments responded. Air-1 also responded and circled over the fire with its spotlight to provide visual support.

The fire burned about three or four acres and was nearly contained Thursday night, Stanton said. It was not located near any homes.
