Syracuse basketball defeats Pittsburgh 59-45: Brent Axe recap (PS; Axe)

Just win, baby.

That's what the Syracuse University basketball team needed to do on Tuesday night at the Carrier Dome against Pittsburgh and win they did.

Syracuse's 59-45 win over Pittsburgh snapped a four-game losing streak and avoided the first five-game losing streak in Jim Boeheim's tenure at Syracuse.

It wasn't pretty (they rarely are for the Orange this year) as the two teams combined to shoot 36-of-91 (39 percent).

Jim Boeheim had to shed his jacket to send a message after Parker Stewart, the only player on Pittsburgh that could muster anything that resembled an offensive game, hit seven three-pointers on the Orange zone.

Syracuse settled in and got an all-around effort from Frank Howard to seal the deal.

The Orange avoided being the first victim to the Panthers in ACC play (though they do get this team again in 10 days) and now can focus on ...practice. Yes, we are talking about practice as the Orange get a rare extended break during conference play and won't hit the court again until next Wednesday against Boston College.

Syracuse Redefines Winning Ugly In Victory Over Pitt – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Aki)

They really do play to the level of competition, don’t they. Against the worst team in the ACC, Syracuse scratched out a 59-45 win over Pitt in one of the worst basketball games played inside the Carrier Dome (high school games and the famed “Media Cup” included).

Don’t let the final score fool you, this wasn’t a defensive battle. It was an offensive struggle, and even that is generous.

This game had a little bit of everything you wouldn’t expect. From an obscene amount of early subs to Boeheim ripping his jacket off. Heck, we even saw cows play basketball at halftime!

Syracuse stymies Pitt in second-half surge (post-gazette.com; Meyer)

Parker Stewart had heard stories about the Carrier Dome, Syracuse’s colossal 35,000-seat venue, about how a football stadium reconfigured for basketball could alter a player’s depth perception and cause even the best shooters to have some of their worst performances.

In a season of firsts for a Pitt team with nine players who hadn’t seen one minute of Division I action 10 weeks ago, it stood as an imposing task for a marksman like Stewart. Tuesday against the Orange, the freshman guard more than lived up to that challenge. The same couldn’t be said for the rest of his team and because of that, the Panthers were handed yet another loss in a season in which they have started to add up in rapid succession.

Former Syracuse basketball 3-point ace Matt Roe might not be the best shooter in his family (video) (PS; Kramer)

Lexie Roe was visiting her grandmother's house a few years back when grandma pulled out a small rectangular object.

Lexie had no idea what it was, but in another era it was commonly known as a VHS tape. Grandma slipped the tape into a VCR and the past unfurled before their eyes.

The tape was a highlight compilation of Lexie's father, Matt, raining threes for Fayetteville-Manlius.

Lexie had a vague recollection that Matt had, in prehistoric times, played for F-M and then went on to singe the nets for Syracuse University.

But she had never seen proof of that, until now.

"I was like, 'What are we watching?' She was like, 'Oh, this is your dad.' My brother (Trevor) and I were laughing so much," Lexie recalled. "It was really cool to watch because it was in the gym that I was playing in. He was shooting really good, so that's always good."

The images burned in Lexie's brain, and years later are being replayed at the very same school where Matt honed his craft. Lexie is now a 14-year-old freshman guard for the Hornets who has drilled 31 three-pointers this season, a total that ranks third in Section III.

Auburn's Prison City brewery again ranks high in national beer tasting (PS; Cazentre)

For the second time in two years, Auburn's Prison City Pub & Brewery has landed one of its beers in the Top 25 ranking for a national magazine's blind taste test.

This time, Prison City's Chin Check earned the No. 25 spot in Paste magazine's rating of barleywines. The staff of the online magazine tasted 62 barleywines from across the country.

In 2016, Prison City's Mass Riot IPA earned the No.1 spot in Paste's rating of 247 American India Pale Ales.

Barleywine, as Paste notes, is a traditional English style of strong, boozy and malty ale, but its profile has changed amid the American craft beer boom in recent years. American versions are usually hopped more aggressively than their English counterparts. Prison City's Chin Check is a strong 9.7 percent alcohol.
