Welcome to Lincoln's Birthday!

Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, was born on February 12, 1809. Over the years, he has become known as one of the greatest American presidents of all time. At the time of his death, in 1865, many saw him as a martyr, and it wasn't too long afterward that his birthday began being observed informally. In the mid-1870s, Julius Francis of Buffalo, New York, began honoring Lincoln on his birthday and petitioned Congress to make the day a legal holiday.

Wolfpack Attack: SU loses to NC State 79-74 (Brent Axe recap) (PS; Axe)

The Syracuse University men’s basketball team had a fight on its hands to be in serious contention for the 2020 NCAA Tournament no matter what.

Now add in the subplot of its leading scorer and best player suffering a fluke injury in warmups Tuesday night that will lead to his absence for an undisclosed period of time.

The Orange just might need a miracle to get to March Madness now.

The NC State Wolfpack took advantage of a Syracuse team that missed Elijah Hughes in a 79-74 win over the Orange on Tuesday night at the Carrier Dome.

Don’t get me wrong. Syracuse fought valiantly without Hughes against NC State, led by its freshman duo of Joe Girard III and Quincy Guerrier, who combined for 46 points. The grit and heart that has grown in the Orange is admirable and makes it a watchable team even with NCAA hopes fading.

Syracuse (14-10, 7-6) now has to beat No. 8 Florida State and No. 5 Louisville on the road in the next two games to stand out in the bubble crowd.

Can the Orange do that without Hughes if he can’t play Saturday and beyond?

Weirder things have happened, but I’d start mixing in more attention to the NIT bracketology (yes they exist) along with Joe Lunardi’s latest projections if I were you.

The Dark Side

Hughes Hurt
The Orange takes on the Wolfpack

Hughes spent just 2:33 on Jim Boeheim Court against NC State before going to the bench with a groin injury.

As a result of Hughes’ injury, Jim Boeheim got to say something for the first time in 44 years as head coach at his postgame press conference.

“It’s unusual,’’ Boeheim said. “I’ve never had a player in 44 years get hurt in the warm-ups, but there’s a first time for everything I guess.’’

It’s an understatement to say how big of a loss Hughes is for Syracuse. He entered Tuesday’s game ranked fifth nationally in average minutes played (38.17) and as the second-leading scorer in the ACC (19.4 ppg).

The Orange did what it could to scrap and claw without Hughes against the Wolfpack. To expect it to beat two Top 10 teams (Florida State and Louisville) on the road without Hughes if he can’t play?

That is simply too tall of an order for Boeheim’s team.

“Hopefully, we’ll get Elijah back,’’ Boeheim said. “We’ll see. We don’t know what’s going to happen with him. We won’t know until probably Saturday whether he’ll be able to go.’’

Syracuse basketball's tourney hopes dim with loss to NC State - The Juice Online (the juice; Stechschulte)

With leading scorer Elijah Hughes leaving the game due to injury with just 2:33 elapsed, a shorthanded Syracuse team put up a valiant fight, but gave up a late run and lost to North Carolina State at home Tuesday night, 79-74. The Wolfpack (16-8, 7-6 ACC) trailed by a half dozen with just over six minutes remaining, but ran off nine straight points to trigger a 15-2 run to pull out a road win.

The Orange (14-10, 7-6 ACC) got big games from freshmen Joe Girard III and Quincy Guerrier, but their combined 46 points was not enough to overcome the fact that they were the only two SU players to make more than 40 percent of their field goal attempts. Overall, Syracuse shot just over 39 percent in the game and made a meager 3-of-18 three-pointers.

N.C. State had no such problems, torching the Orange by shooting over 52 percent from the field and 42 percent from long range in each half. The ‘Pack made 11 triples in the game, helping to offset their 19 turnovers and -5 rebounding differential, including giving up 14 offensive rebounds to SU.

Shortly after Hughes went to the bench with what was called a muscle strain in his upper left leg during the television broadcast, North Carolina State rolled off a 10-1 run to take a 12-7 lead six-and-a-half minutes into the game. The Wolfpack pushed their lead to nine just three minutes later with an 8-2 run.

The Syracuse offense woke up, ripping off a 15-3 run. Marek Dolezaj and Quincy Guerrier each scored inside to start the run, then Joe Girard III added a three-point-play for seven straight Orange points.

The ‘Pack connected on a three, but that was just a speed bump. SU rolled off eight more points, started by Girard pulling up for three and adding a runner to tie the score. Dolezaj lobbed for a Bourama Sidibe lay-up, then Guerrier added a foul shot for a 26-23 Syracuse lead with 5:27 left in the first half.

N.C. State Basketball: Wolfpack get huge tournament boost with win at Syracuse (oldnorthbanter.com; Tucker)

The N.C. State basketball team earned a hard-fought road win on Tuesday night at Syracuse.

Coming into Tuesday night’s showdown with Syracuse, N.C. State basketball had yet to post a signature win this season. While beating the nine-loss Orange isn’t what you’d typically call a marquee win, it was a game the Wolfpack undoubtedly needed to win. State had almost a full week to gear up for Syracuse, and it showed early on. The Wolfpack jumped out to a nine-point lead midway through the first half, and was up four at the intermission. The game went back and forth throughout most of the second half; however, in the end it was N.C. State who survived a late Syracuse push to notch a 79-74 win. The victory marks the Pack’s second on the current road trip, and elevates them to fifth in the conference standings.

Devon Daniels continued his good work for the Wolfpack, as he led the team in scoring against the Orange.

Tuesday night marked the fifth-straight game that junior guard Devon Daniels has finished in double-figures. Over that span Daniels is averaging 16 points and more than five rebounds per game. Perhaps just as impressive is the fact that he’s shooting 46% from the field in those contests. It’s also worth noting that he’s been getting it done on the defensive end as well. In State’s last five games, Daniels has recorded at least three steals in three of those games. He led the team with 23 points on 8-of-15 shooting against Syracuse, including two makes from beyond the arc.

Seeing as though teammates CJ Bryce and Markell Johnson seem to be re-emerging as scorers over the past few games, the Wolfpack could be heating up at just the right time. March is fast approaching, and State’s schedule isn’t going to be getting any easier. Despite that, if Daniels, Bryce, and Johnson can all get going at the same time, they’ll become an incredibly difficult team to defend. Add in the fact that DJ Funderburk is as dynamic as they come down low, and N.C. State could suddenly be a nightmare to go up against.

Pack Closes Strong to Win at Syracuse - NC State University Athletics (gopack.com)

The NC State men's basketball team held Syracuse to just one field goal over the final six minutes of the game to win Tuesday night, 79-74, at the Carrier Dome.

The Orange took a 68-62 lead on two Joe Girard free throws with 6:16 to play. Devon Daniels immediately responded with seven consecutive points to give the Pack a 69-68 lead with 4:25 to go.

The Pack extended the run to 9-0 on two C.J. Bryce free throws.

After the Orange cut the lead to one with another Girard basket, NC State hit consecutive three-pointers by Markell Johnson and Bryce to stretch the lead to 77-70 with 2:35 to go.

Syracuse would never get closer than four points the rest of the way.

Daniels tied his season-high with 23 points. The junior guard scored 15 of his 23 points in the second half. He finished the game 8-of-15 shooting and added three steals.

Bryce finished with 19 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including 4-of-6 from three-point range. Jericole Hellems was the third NC State player in double figures with 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Johnson finished with eight points, eight assists and a career-high tying four steals.

With the win, NC State improves to 16-8, 7-6 in the ACC.

The Pack finished the game 11-of-25 from three-point range. Syracuse hit its first three-pointer of the game on the opening possession of the contest, but hit just two more the rest of the game as the Orange was 3-of-18 from deep.

Girard led Syracuse with a career-high 30 points and Quincy Guerrier had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

NC State led 39-35 at the break.

Syracuse held an early 6-2 lead, but NC State went on an 18-5 run over nearly eight minutes to take its largest lead of the game, 20-11, on Bryce three-pointer with 9:22 left in the half.

ACC Roundup - Wake Forest Piles More Pain On UNC (DBR; King)

In ACC action, Virginia outlasted Notre Dame in overtime 50-49. Meanwhile, it was a good night for two thirds of the Big Four as NC State won at Syracuse 79-74 and Wake Forest dominated UNC 74-57 and it wasn’t nearly that close. No, that’s not a typo.

Wednesday’s ACC Action

  • Louisville @ Georgia Tech || 8:00 || ACCN
  • Clemson @ PIttsburgh || 9:00 || ACCNX
Tuesday’s Results
  • NC State 79 Syracuse 74
  • Wake Forest 74 UNC 57
  • Virginia 50 Notre Dame 49
ACC Standings

Wake was up 24 in the second half and just basically killed UNC. The Tar Heels shot just 33.3 percent. Garrison Brooks, who played with a scratched cornea, was 0-5 from the floor but still hit 7-8 from the stripe.

Go figure.

No one shot well other than Armando Bacot (5-10) and Christian Keeling (7-14). Cole Anthony shot 5-19 and took nearly a third of UNC’s shots, hitting 26.3 percent of his attempts.

After the game, Roy Williams went off on his team although not as severely as he has previously this season. He said he told them he was tired of “coming [out] here and apologizing” and that “everything that was involved in the course of the game they had it better than we did.” He included coaching in the laundry list. He also said that Brooks has had his right cornea scratched three times this season.

‘Holy crap, it’s huge!’ 3 amazing Upstate NY ice fishing tales from this winter (PS; Figura)

THE 41-INCH TIGER MUSKIE

Steve Zehr said he used to live in Lewis County until moving to New Hampshire in 1996. He has a lifetime license to hunt and fish in New York and often returns to this state to fish.

He was recently fishing in an ice fishing tournament on Beaver Lake In Lewis County with a friend when he landed a memorable fish – a 41-inch tiger muskie that weighed a little over 16 pounds.

It was during the Dave Tuttle Memorial Tournament. He was on the ice with friend, Rick Martin, when he landed the big fish on a tip-up baited with a small shiner.

“I was expecting to catch pickerel and perch. I did not even know that tiger muskies were in the lake,” he said. “After he went by the hole the first time I knew it was not a pickerel, but not sure what it was.

Thought maybe a pike to be that big. He made a few more runs and next time by the hole I got a better look.”

He told his friend to get the gaff out of his basket. No way was he pulling this up the hole, he said.

As I got him back to the hole Martin saw it and said, “Holy crap, it’s huge!”

Martin got the gaff on it just in time. As he pulled it out the water, the nylon leader broke.
