Welcome to Mardi Gras!

The origins of Mardi Gras can be traced to medieval Europe, passing through Rome and Venice in the 17th and 18th centuries to the French House of the Bourbons. From here, the traditional revelry of "Boeuf Gras," or fatted calf, followed France to her colonies.

On March 2, 1699, French-Canadian explorer Jean Baptiste Le Moyne Sieur de Bienville arrived at a plot of ground 60 miles directly south of New Orleans, and named it "Pointe du Mardi Gras" when his men realized it was the eve of the festive holiday. Bienville also established "Fort Louis de la Louisiane" (which is now Mobile) in 1702. In 1703, the tiny settlement of Fort Louis de la Mobile celebrated America's very first Mardi Gras.

In 1704, Mobile established a secret society (Masque de la Mobile), similar to those that form our current Mardi Gras krewes. It lasted until 1709. In 1710, the "Boeuf Gras Society" was formed and paraded from 1711 through 1861. The procession was held with a huge bull's head pushed along on wheels by 16 men. Later, Rex would parade with an actual bull, draped in white and signaling the coming Lenten meat fast. This occurred on Fat Tuesday.

Watch: Pitt's Capel, Johnson, Horton Talk Syracuse, Recent Run, 2020-21 (pittsburghsportsnow.com; videos; Saunders)

Pitt’s four game-losing streak has not dampened the spirits of the Panthers as they prepare to face Syracuse for a second time this season at Petersen Events Center on Wednesday.

Pitt has had some success against the Orange, particularly in the second half of their first meeting this season, but Jeff Capel expects Jim Boeheim and company to make adjustments.

Capel, Xavier Johnson and Ithiel Horton also talked about how Horton has impacted the team despite sitting out this season and his potential for the future.

Syracuse basketball's resilience passes test against Georgia Tech - The Juice Online (the juice; Sears)

With 7:08 to go in the first half of Syracuse’s game against Georgia Tech on Saturday, guard Joseph Girard III dribbled the ball off his foot and out of bounds for a turnover, drawing frustrated groans from the crowd.

That play was a microcosm of a first half that saw the Orange shoot 7-26 from the field and head into halftime down 38-27. The energy (or lack thereof) was palpable, both from the team and the fans.

“This was always going to be a hard game to win, especially the way they’ve been playing,” Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim said. “And when we got off to a bad first half it was really hard.”

Warming up for the second half, the team showed no noticeable burst of energy or focus, and the crowd at the Dome seemed to be steeling itself for Syracuse to drop their fourth straight game.

Then at 19:38 something happened: Girard sunk a 3. Less than a minute later, he scored again. Then Elijah Hughes scored. The team was beginning to heat up on a 7-0 run.

By the time Buddy Boeheim made a pretty jumper with 15:49 left, Syracuse was trailing by just 40-39, and the once listless crowd erupted into roars.

Syracuse basketball has clinched immortality for the 2nd straight season (itlh; Esden Jr)

Syracuse basketball just won its second consecutive title, no not on the court, but off of it. Here are all the details and what it all means.

Syracuse basketball is currently in the midst of its worst six year run ever under head coach Jim Boeheim.

If the Orange miss the NCAA Tournament this season (as they’re currently projected), this will be the first time this team has missed March Madness three times in a six year span ever under Boeheim’s reign.

Despite that fun fact, the Orange faithful have continued to make the loud house college basketball’s best home court advantage.

Per Mike Waters of Syracuse.com, Syracuse hoops has clinched its second straight attendance title.

The Orange still have one more home game coming up on the last day of February vs North Carolina this Saturday. But this past weekend vs Georgia Tech, Syracuse had a crowd of nearly 27,000 which bumped SU’s average attendance up to 21,256.

The next closest team is Kentucky who is currently batting second in the country in 2019-20. This season, through 16 regular season contests, have drawn an average of 20,114 fans per game.

While they still have two more home games on the docket vs Auburn and vs Tennessee respectively and both are expected to be near sell-outs, it still doesn’t matter.

Rupp Arena, the home of the Kentucky Wildcats, has a full capacity of 20,545 which means it’s literally impossible with the games remaining for them to leap frog Syracuse.

This is the first time the Orange have won back-to-back attendance titles since the 2014-2015 seasons. Since the Carrier Dome opened in 1980, Syracuse has won the attendance crown 16 times including this season.

'Cuse Militia Podcast: Episode 207- Syracuse Basketball: Georgia Tech Post-game/Pitt Preview! (libsync.com; podcast; Cuse Militia)

What's up Cuse Nation?!?! Joe's back so we're back! We'll give you our thoughts on the GT game. @JamesSzuba joins us for some fan feedback as well as a little game of Fake News Or Not. Then, we'll let you know what we think about our second match up versus Pitt!

Yes, the ACC's down, but coaches think that story might be changing (espn; Adelson)

As soon as the doors opened to the Dean E. Smith Center for their first glimpse at North Carolina basketball on Sept. 27, deliriously excited fans scrambled inside, with many claiming their seats and others forming such long lines at the merchandise stands that they snaked into the concourse as overwhelmed cashiers failed to keep up with demand.

Wearing freshly purchased Carolina gear, they watched ballyhooed freshman Cole Anthony windmill dunk his way into their hearts in his debut. As if "Late Night with Roy" needed anything extra to put it over the top, Roy Williams wore a pink sport coat and danced the Electric Slide. After two hours filled with cheers, the giddy fans headed for the exits, likely thinking, "This is going to be our year!"

After all, there are annual national championship expectations at schools such as North Carolina. Raucous pep rallies in the form of Midnight Madness serve only to bolster what the fans expect to see come November. Replacing four starters? Psh. We're Carolina!

Virginia and North Carolina are just two of the prominent teams that have fallen off their paces from the previous season. Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports
Five months later, though, nothing about Carolina basketball is all that electric. Losing Anthony to injury early in the season sent the Tar Heels into a nosedive, and Williams grew progressively more frustrated as the games wore on. In January, Williams opined that this is the "least gifted" team he has had at North Carolina. Last week, he went into meltdown mode after yet another last-second loss, declaring, "You got two choices: You can compete your butt off, or you can get in the fetal position and curl up and start crying," before going on a rant that included a curse word for which he quickly apologized.

More evidence the big e-commerce warehouse in Clay really will happen? (PS; Moriarty)

The e-commerce distribution center proposed in Clay is so big, not everyone in the Syracuse area is convinced it will actually get built here.

But here’s another sign it will.

The family that owns the Liverpool Public Golf and Country Club, where the nearly 4 million-square-foot development is proposed, is selling the facility’s equipment, right down to its lawn mowers and golf carts.

Brzostek’s Auction Service has scheduled a public auction of the golf course’s restaurant equipment on March 10 and an auction of its golf course equipment on March 11. Both auctions will be held at 10 a.m. each day at the country club at 7209 Morgan Road.

So, it certainly looks like the owners of the golf course are confident the sale of the property to developer Trammell Crow Co. will go through and construction of the $350 million warehouse will start this spring. Many believe the warehouse will be occupied by online giant Amazon.

The sale has not happened yet. Stephen Schmitt, who manages the golf course, said his family is working on the assumption that it will happen this spring and wants to be prepared. That’s why it is selling the country club’s equipment, he said.

Congrats to FSU for getting the win over Louisville - Seminoles seem solid.
Now, if we can just get UNC and Syracuse back in the Top 25 next season...

So, will we be seeing Tomcat buying his own golf cart and painting it Syracuse colors?

Unlikely. I strongly prefer to walk. Hoping I can get in another round or two at my beloved Liverpool course before construction starts. Doesn’t sound like I can expect much maintenance work to be performed...
