Welcome to International Kiss a Ginger Day!

International Kiss a Ginger Day was created by Canadian Derek Forgie in 2009, as a response to Kick a Ginger Day, which had been created the previous year. Forgie started a Facebook group for the day and invited eight of his red-haired friends to it. To his surprise, the group and the day soon took off. On the day, red-haired people—or gingers—are given kisses if they want to receive them.

Red is the rarest hair color, with only 2 percent of the world's population having it. Most redheads are of northern or western European ancestry; the highest percentage of redheads come from Scotland, followed by Ireland. Redheads are often stereotyped as having a fiery temper. Kick a Ginger Day led to many redheads being bullied. In ancient Greece, some redheads were considered to be vampires. Many redheads were killed in Europe between the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries because they were perceived to be associated with witchcraft.

Red hair is caused by a mutated MC1R gene. If both parents carry this gene—even if they don't have red hair themselves—their child has a one in four chance of being born with red hair. Those with red hair actually have less hair on their heads. A redhead has on average 90,000 strands of hair on their head, while blondes have about 110,000, and brunettes have 140,000. What redheads lack in number they make up in thickness, though, as strands of red hair are thicker than the strands of other colors. Red hair also strongly holds its pigment; it is hard to dye red hair a different color unless it is bleached first.

Syracuse basketball vs. North Carolina: What to know (PS; $; Waters)

Syracuse basketball vs. North Carolina: What to know - syracuse.com
North Carolina was supposed to play Clemson on Saturday and then take the next week off before facing Florida State on Jan. 16.

Syracuse was scheduled to host Clemson on Tuesday.

But the Clemson basketball program went into a Covid pause last week, forcing its games against North Carolina and Syracuse to be postponed.

As a result, the ACC put together a game between Syracuse and North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., for Tuesday night. The game between the Orange and the Tar Heels is actually a makeup for their originally-scheduled game on Jan. 2 that was scrapped after the Syracuse program was put into contact tracing quarantine after a coronavirus exposure.

That’s how Syracuse (7-2 overall, 1-1 ACC) comes to be in Chapel Hill on a Tuesday night to play North Carolina (7-4, 2-2) in a game that was on the docket as recently as a week ago.

Beat writers unanimously predict Syracuse to lose against North Carolina (DO; Staff)

After defeating Georgetown in its final nonconference game on Saturday, Syracuse (7-2, 1-1 Atlantic Coast) returns to ACC play with a matchup against North Carolina. Buddy Boeheim led the Orange with 21 points against the Hoyas, while three others joined him in double-digits — continuing a season-long trend of balanced scoring.

The Tar Heels (7-4, 2-2 ACC), meanwhile, have won their past two games, defeating Notre Dame and Miami by one and two points, respectively.

Here’s what The Daily Orange’s beat writers think will happen when Syracuse faces North Carolina:

Andrew Crane (8-1)
Not Chapel Hill, again
North Carolina 75, Syracuse 68

If Syracuse plays like it has the past two games, this one could get out of hand early, even though the Tar Heels already have four losses. Two double-digit leads evaporated against Pittsburgh and Georgetown due to a combination of poor shot selection, foul trouble, lack of rebounding and porous defense. Any, or all, of those factors emerging against UNC could lead to Syracuse’s second loss in three games.

Three of North Carolina’s four defeats this year have been by single-digits, and UNC is a physical, interior-oriented team that doesn’t shoot many 3s (27.3 3PA/FGA) and could dominate SU on the boards. Bourama Sidibe’s absence could worsen those disadvantages for Syracuse, just as it has already this season. These are the games that SU needs to win over the final two-thirds of its season to solidify a spot in the NCAA Tournament, and while I think those victories will come eventually, this game will not be one of them.

Opponent preview: What to know about North Carolina (DO; Crane)

Syracuse pivots back to Atlantic Coast Conference play for the rest of the season when it travels to Chapel Hill to face North Carolina on Tuesday night. It’s the second road conference game for the Orange this season — a blowout win against Boston College was the first — and they narrowly defeated their most recent opponent, Georgetown.

After a game against Clemson was postponed, UNC’s week off before facing Florida State aligned with an opening on SU’s schedule. The Tar Heels have won their past two games, and are one of the best rebounding teams in the ACC.

Here’s what you need to know about the Tar Heels (7-4, 2-2) before Tuesday:

All-time series

North Carolina leads, 13-5

Last time they played

In the final game of the ACC Tournament, before the sports world halted due to the coronavirus, Syracuse cruised past the Tar Heels 81-53. Elijah Hughes, playing his final game for the Orange, led SU with 27 points and seven rebounds, while Bourama Sidibe tallied his fifth double-double of the year (12 points, 13 rebounds).

It was the second-widest margin of victory Syracuse had in conference play last season, and the Orange did so despite only hitting seven 3-pointers. A 10-2 run to open the game and a 15-0 run leading into halftime built a 21-point margin that lasted for nearly all of the second frame. SU advanced to play Louisville the next day, but that game, and the remainder of the conference tournament, was canceled.

KenPom odds

North Carolina has a 62% chance of winning, with a projected score of 73-70.

Syracuse Orange v. North Carolina Tar Heels Prediction & Preview (1/12/21) - The Juice Online (the juice; Staff)

Syracuse travels to North Carolina to take on the Tar Heels on Tuesday, Jan. 12 at 9 p.m. (TV: ACC Network). Ahead of the game, The Juice Online’s Saugat Sen and Wes Cheng give their predictions below.

Saugat Sen
Season Record: 1-0

Syracuse and North Carolina both are .500 in conference play, and have played their fair share of close games recently.

Last week, the Orange blew an 18 point lead to Pitt and eventually lost by three. On Saturday, against their old rivals, Georgetown, the Orange saw their 16-point lead fizzle to three before hanging on for a five-point win.

Meanwhile, the Tar Heels have won their last two games by a combined three points. Andrew Platek’s running jumper with three seconds go to allowed the Tar Heels to squeak by Miami, 67-65, one game after freshman Day’ron Sharpe’s late jumper pushed UNC to a 66-65 win over Notre Dame.

Sharpe will be the player to watch in this game, having averaged 18.5 ppg and 13.0 rpg in those two wins. The No. 2 center in the 2020 class according to ESPN, Sharpe will be a big problem for the Orange, who will likely be missing starting center Bourama Sidibe again.

At 6’11” and 265 pounds, the Orange have a tough time stopping the freshman from dominating both ends of the floor. Combine that with the Orange struggling to hold leads lately, UNC will be too much for Syracuse to overcome as UNC wins 75-68.

Wes Cheng
Season Record 3-1

In Syracuse’s 63-60 loss to Pitt last week, the Orange was pummeled on the glass, surrendering a -16 margin. It should be a surprise, as the Panthers average 42.8 rebounds per game, 10th in college basketball.

ORANGE GAME DAY: Syracuse travels to North Carolina to face the Tar Heels tonight (preview, media & info) - Fingerlakes1.com (fingerlakes1.com; Evans)

Syracuse plays two games on the road this week, starting Tuesday, Jan. 12 at North Carolina. Tip off at the Dean E. Smith Center is set for 9 p.m.

Syracuse (7-2, 1-1) got back to its winning ways with a 74-69 victory against Georgetown on Saturday night. Junior Buddy Boeheim led a group of four Orange to reach double-digits in scoring with a team-high 21 points. Sophomore Joseph Girard III scored 18 points and dished out a season-high eight assists.

The Orange and Tar Heels were originally scheduled to play in Chapel Hill on Jan. 2, but the game was postponed when Syracuse had to pause to COVID-19 safety protocols. The Orange were originally scheduled to host Clemson on Tuesday night, but the Tigers’ program is currently paused after positive COVID-19 test result and subsequent contact tracing within the program.

North Carolina enters Tuesday’s game on a two-game winning streak, which has improved its record to 7-4 overall, 2-2 in ACC play. The Tar Heels have won their previous two games by a total of three points.

Tuesday’s game marks the 19th all-time meeting between the Orange and Tar Heels. North Carolina has a 13-5 advantage in the series.

Syracuse Doesn’t Need Everyone to Win – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Shults)

In Syracuse’s bounce back win over Georgetown, SU was led by Buddy Boeheim and Joe Girard — both of which have struggled in the early season.

Boeheim finished with 21 points to lead all scorers while Girard finished a triple behind, with 18 points of his own. Early in the season, the Orange have found ways to win even when its deep-shooters’ shots weren’t falling.

Instead of relying on Girard and Boeheim, Quincy Guerrier became a focal point of the offense. Whether scoring on the low blocks are by firing of 3’s, Guerrier provided an alternative to run the offense through. There have been games when fellow forward Marek Dolezaj has been leaned on. Against Bryant, Dolezaj scored 20 points in a squeak-by SU victory. While Rutgers was able to lock down Syracuse’s primary scorers, the senior found the bucket for 14 points. And against Buffalo, Dolezaj was 7-9 from the field for 19.

So far this season Guerrier and Alan Griffin are the top to scorers for Syracuse, both averaging over 15 points. After leading scoring against Georgetown, Boeheim seems to be refining his groove and is averaging over 15 points once again.

Dolezaj and Girard are both averaging around 12, despite Girard’s early season slump. It’s still too early to tell if Girard’s struggles will continue for the rest of the season, or if he righted himself against the Hoyas.

Former Syracuse basketball star Jerami Grant breaks Detroit Pistons scoring record (PS; $; Herbert)

Former Syracuse basketball star Jerami Grant has broken a Detroit Pistons scoring record in his first 10 games with the team.

According to Pistons Nation, Grant has scored 251 points to start the 2020-21 NBA season, setting a new record for Detroit. Adrian Dantley scored 239 points in his first 10 games with the Pistons in 1986, Ben Gordon scored 212 over the same stretch in 2009, and Isiah Thomas scored 212 in his first 10 games as a rookie.

Grant is averaging 25.1 points per game this season, 12th among the NBA’s scoring leaders and more than double his output in his final season at Syracuse University. Grant is also shooting 37.5% from 3-point range and averaging 6.2 rebounds and 1.9 assists.

Grant became a free agent after helping lead the Denver Nuggets to the Western Conference Finals in last year’s NBA playoffs, and signed a three-year contract with the Pistons reportedly worth $60 million. The deal is looking solid for both Detroit and Grant, who could be a Most Improved Player candidate.

ACC Roundup - Virginia Tech Is Looking Pretty Damn Good (DBR; King)

The other day we talked about how impressive Virginia Tech’s offense is and specifically that they were moving the ball around - and then shooting - with stunning quickness.

That and coach Mike Young’s willingness to let his players play is leading to good things.

Well that and that the Hokies now have a useful big man.

Notre Dame found out how dangerous Virginia Tech can be Friday night when the Hokies took out the Irish 77-63.

One of the key factors for the Hokies was the play of Keve Aluma, a 6-9 transfer who followed Young from Wofford and has turned out to be one of the better big men in the ACC this season.

Aluma hung 15 points and 12 boards on the Irish, out rebounding rival big men Nate Laszewski (rhymes with Krzyzewski) and John Durham, who combined for seven, none offensive.

Jalen Cone added 18, with four three pointers. Hunter Catoor had 15. Justyn Mutts picked up 14 too.

Kinney Drugs books appointments for entire supply of coronavirus vaccine in 5 hours (PS; $; Moriarty)

Kinney Drugs booked appointments for its entire 7,500-shot supply of coronavirus vaccine in just five hours Monday.

The Gouverneur-based drug store chain announced Monday morning that it would administer the Moderna Covid-19 vaccine to people 75 years and older by appointment at all its 75 pharmacies in New York, including 16 in Onondaga County, becoming the first drug store chain to offer the vaccine.

Within five hours, people had booked appointments via the chain’s website for Kinney’s entire supply of 7,500 doses.

“Response has been tremendous and currently, all appointments are BOOKED; however, additional appointments will open up as more vaccine becomes available,” the company said on its website. “We ask that you please do NOT call your local store, as they are focused on serving patients and will have no additional information.”

Neal Gorman, a spokesperson for the company, said the chain’s pharmacy teams collectively received thousands of inquiries about the vaccine.

You guys almost certainly know more about NCAA basketball than I do, so could someone PLEASE explain to me why Florida State, currently 5-2, is ranked 59th by NET, while the team the Seminoles beat in the B1G/ACC Challenge, Indiana, is 8-5 but ranked 43rd - 16 spots higher! What in the raisin & egg salad is going on?

Colgate at #19? Are my eyes deceiving me? A 3-1 team in the Patriot League that has not beaten anyone?

Colgate destroyed Army. Also lost to them the next day. But Army beat UB. Colgate also has beaten Boston University twice. Boston University beat Army as well.

I think a lot of it has to do with the Army win over UB. Believe UB was down 2 or 3 starters for that game. UB by the way finally played again, beating Ball State on 1/9. It was their first game since they lost to Syracuse on 12/10 and possibly infected our team.

Don't think any of these models work very well with only a handful of games played. The Patriot League started late and I don't think they played any OOC games, so those teams haven't played enough for the models to identify them as lousy yet.
