National Cheese Pizza Day is dedicated to the pie shaped flatbread with toppings, first eaten in Naples in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. At the time, this coastal city was not part of Italy, but its own kingdom. The working poor, or lazzaroni, lived outside or in small homes, and needed cheap food. Pizza consisted of flatbread with toppings such as tomatoes, garlic, cheese, oil, or anchovies, and it was sold by street vendors and informal restaurants, and eaten for any meal. Naples became part of Italy in 1861, and in 1889, Queen Margherita and King Umberto visited Naples and tried pizza. Legend has it that she loved mozzarella pizza, which included mozzarella cheese, red tomatoes, and green basil—the colors of the Italian flag. The pizza then took her namesake. But, pizza didn't end up becoming popular in the rest of Italy until the 1940's.

Ushering in a new era of Syracuse basketball, longtime Syracuse assistant Adrian “Red ” Autry will take over the reins of legendary coach Jim Boeheim.Syracuse will have a new head coach for the first time in 47 years.
The Orange will no doubt look different, specifically with the diminished reliance (or even the absence) of the 2-3 zone along with the departures of Jesse Edwards (West Virginia) and Joe Girard (Clemson).
Nonetheless, the buzz is certainly palpable in the Carrier Dome as freshman star Judah Mintz withdrew from the 2023 NBA Draft. Mintz is a unique player as he can strongly finish at the rim yet score at a quality clip in the mid-range.
Alongside Mintz at the guard spot is one of the top transfer portal additions of the 2023 class: former five-star McDonald’s All-American recruit JJ Starling from Notre Dame.
Additionally, Adrian Autry was able to retain two key pieces at the forward position with Chris Bell and Benny Williams. Both Williams and Bell should provide valuable length, athleticism and three-point scoring from the wing if given consistent minutes.
Although the Orange will be young and there are questions about how they will operate the center spot, the ceiling of this young core gives Orange fans reasons for hope heading into November and beyond.

New Syracuse basketball 3-star PG recruit, Albany native, plans to visit SU (itlh; Adler)
New Syracuse basketball target Keyshuan Tillery said in a recent interview that he wants to take a visit to the Orange campus in the future.
The 6-foot-1 Tillery, who hails from Albany, N.Y., is a standout rising junior at the New Hampton School in New Hampton, N.H. He received a scholarship offer from the ‘Cuse coaching staff not too long ago, around the time that he participated in the team’s annual Elite Camp.
A fast-rising three-star point guard in the 2025 class, Tillery suits up on the AAU circuit for the Albany City Rocks in Nike’s EYBL league, a program that has seen numerous of its alumni head to the Orange over the years.
In a recent interview with SyracuseOnSI publisher Mike McAllister, it was disclosed that Syracuse basketball first-year head coach Adrian Autry was the one to offer a scholarship to Tillery, who says he’s excited about the ‘Cuse offer.

Besides the Orange, Tillery’s growing offer sheet includes Northwestern, Albany, UMBC, Georgia Tech, North Carolina A&T, Hampton, Bryant, Temple, Mike Hopkins-led Washington, Wyoming, UMass and St. Bonaventure.
During his sophomore year at the New Hampton School, Tillery averaged an impressive 17.5 points, 6.5 assists and 4 rebounds per game. He was named by the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council as an All-NEPSAC player for the 2022-23 campaign.
More recently, in the latest grassroots basketball season, Tillery appeared to be a big stock riser due to his play over the spring and summer for the City Rocks, including in early July when the EYBL conducted its annual Peach Jam event and affiliated Peach Invitational Tournament in North Augusta, S.C.

Syracuse Basketball: 4-star Kiyan Anthony On3 NIL Valuation over $500K (itlh; Adler)
Syracuse basketball 2025 priority recruit Kiyan Anthony, a four-star shooting guard from New York City, has an On3 NIL Valuation of more than $500,000.
I recently wrote an article about the On3 NIL Valuations of Orange sophomore guards Judah Mintz and J.J. Starling, and now I’m turning my attention to the 6-foot-5 Anthony, who is the son of ‘Cuse legend and long-time NBA star Carmelo Anthony.
Kiyan Anthony is a rising junior at the powerhouse Long Island Lutheran High School in Brookville, N.Y., which is a member of the loaded 10-team National Interscholastic Basketball Conference (“NIBC”).
He received a scholarship offer from the Orange coaching staff last November. Recent media reports stated that Anthony plans to take upcoming official visits to four schools, and they are Syracuse basketball, Florida State, Indiana and Michigan. Anthony reportedly has an official visit scheduled to Florida State from October 13 to October 14.

Anthony, in recent months, has seen his full offer sheet and national rankings soar, due in part to strong play over the spring and summer in grassroots basketball while competing for the Baltimore-based Team Melo in Nike’s EYBL league.
These days, within the 2025 class, multiple recruiting services rank Kiyan Anthony as a top-40 national prospect, a top-15 shooting guard and the No. 1 player in New York.

There are few local events that are more etched into the memories of Central New Yorkers than the Labor Day Storm that tore through the region 25 years ago.
For a region known for snow and cold, it was a late summer thunderstorm, of all things, that paralyzed modern life far more than any recent snowstorm has.
In almost an instant, the storm swept through Onondaga County in the early morning hours of Sept. 7, 1998. It cost the county $30 million in damages, cost two people their lives at the State Fairgrounds, and left a quarter of million people in Upstate New York without electricity.
It changed the landscape of the area. The view out front and back windows would never look the same.
Thousands of trees and famous old buildings were destroyed or disfigured in minutes when the 115 mile per hour winds howled through. The storm also brought unprecedented lightning, averaging 10 to 20 strikes per minute during the storm.

St. Joe’s among 3 more Central New York hospitals reimposing mask mandates (PS; Dowty)
St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center has reimposed a mask mandate for all emergency patients and visitors as state health officials monitor an uptick in Covid-19 cases.
The Syracuse hospital joins Upstate’s University and Community General hospitals as the biggest Central New York hospitals to require large-scale masking in the past several weeks. Upstate’s masking requirement, announced Aug. 17, extends beyond emergency rooms to all clinical areas of its two hospitals.
In addition, Oswego Hospital and Auburn Memorial Hospital have also reimposed mask mandates, according to their websites.
As of Friday, neither Crouse Hospital nor Syracuse’s Veterans Administration hospital have reimposed mask mandates, spokesmen for those two hospitals said.
St. Joseph’s mask mandate applies only to its emergency department for now. Emergency department employees must wear N95 masks, while patients and visitors must wear standard surgical masks, spokesman Jamie Arnold said.
“Patient and staff safety is our top priority and we are monitoring the situation closely to determine the best course of action,” Arnold said.
Even though testing data has not shown a significant spike in Covid-19 cases, hospitals are reporting more Covid-19 cases in recent weeks. Most people don’t test for Covid-19 anymore, so infections are not routinely reported. There’s also an increase in Covid-19 found in wastewater, including around Syracuse, according to state data.
